BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP
When we lose a loved one by death, we are wounded. Just as a wound does, we need to heal
from within, to express our thoughts and feelings, even when they seem crazy. A support
group is a safe haven where we can talk, cry, share our anger, guilt and fears with those
who understand and care.
A Bereavement Support Group, sponsored by Christ the King Bereavement Committee, has been
organized for all persons grieving the death of a loved one. The program will consist of
six sessions beginning Wednesday, September 19th and every other Wednesday through
November 28th. The program will be held in the Church Library. For more information,

A PILLOW
A LUXURY? - Not everyone has the luxury of using a pillow and sheets
when they sleep at night. Hundreds of people a year move into a home with no pillows,
sheets, blankets, dishes and all those things you and I take for granted. It could be a
senior who had lived with an abusive family member, or a family of 6 who had a fire, the
list is endless. BUT, they all could use the luxury, of a pillow and bed linens. Many of
these people do not have a bed, so a pillow is the only soft spot in their life. If you
have no clean, in good shape pillows or bed linens, consider sending a check made out to
Ladies of Charity, (mark it For Pillows & send it to: Ladies of Charity, 1122
Broadway, Buffalo, NY 14212). For $12 we can supply a family of 4 with pillows. Please ask
your friends & family to aid us in this need to help make life a little
"softer" for others.
PETER'S PENCE
Next weekend, this collection will be taken to give all Catholics an opportunity to join
the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, to quickly help relieve the suffering of those
subjected to war, oppression, disease, and natural disasters. Please be generous next
weekend, the Holy Father depends on our support.

A PILLOW
If you
don't have clean, in good shape pillows or bed linens, consider sending a check made out
to Ladies of Charity, (mark it For Pillows & send it to: Ladies of Charity, 1122
Broadway, Buffalo, NY 14212). For $12 we can supply a family of 4 with pillows. Please ask
your friends & family to aid us in this need to help make life a little
"softer" for others.
YOUR HELP IS URGENTLY NEEDED
In this land of plenty, many don't have enough. Help us transport donated surplus food
from supermarkets to soup kitchens! We "shuttle" 7 days a week. You select
driving assignments to fit your own schedule and vehicle size. Call 688-2527 for more
information.

The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for my son getting a good job.
2) Thank you for helping me make the right decision.
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND 1-HOUR EACH WEEK WITH JESUS
IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
Share all your problems with God. Remember: If you go to God with a thimble, you can only
bring back a thimbleful.
YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE
The Pro-Life Movement stands at a decisive and enormously important point in human
history. It is focused now on the issues of abortion and euthanasia, but it necessarily
extends into many other urgent issues: the family, human rights, personal human identity,
and the relationship of human beings to God. The possibility of human engineering, with
all its grotesque implications, seems to be coming into view. The times desperately need
courageous witnesses to the truth of human life, human nature and God's law. - Msgr.
Robert Sokolowski, Homily August 10, 2000.
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL!
Spend an hour per week in silent adoration of Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament and

DEFENSES AGAIINST STRESS
Stressed? Harried? Defend yourself.
First, be more organized, less hectic.
Next, follow these simple suggestions to help improve your life:
1. Keep a written appointment calendar.
2. Give yourself time for a healthy breakfast at home.
3. Make time for daily prayer and meditation.
4. Say "no" even to friends' requests.
5. Do not multi-task, ever.
6. Then get rid of clutter in all its aspects.
7. Donate what you've cleaned out of closets, attic, basement, store room(s) to charity
(St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Drive is November 10 & 11 - plan ahead).
8. Confide your fears, worries, problems, joys and sorrows to a journal.
9. Go to bed earlier. Sleep does knit up "the raveled sleeve of care."
Your life is God's precious gift. Don't waste it on stress.
Human success is in the hand of the Lord. (Sirach 10:5)

BISHOP'S COMMITTEE DISCUSSION GROUP
Did you know that there is a women's group at our church that might be right for you? You
might have heard of the Bishop's Committee Discussion Program and never knew what it was
about. The BCDP has a long history in the Diocese but its purpose has always been about
fellowship. Our group at Christ the King is actually 8 or 10 smaller groups that meet once
a month from October to May to discuss a preset topic. Each meeting isn't just a
discussion of the topic but also an opportunity to get to know some women in our Parish on
a more meaningful level. Does it sound like something you'd like to check out? For more
information, you can call Mary Ellen Sima at 839-4182. She will be arranging the groups in
the next few weeks and we'd love you to join too.
For more information,
please call Linda Maslona at 839-2363.

return it in the weekly collection basket.
PETER'S PENCE
This weekend, a collection will be taken to give all Catholics an opportunity to join the
Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, to quickly help relieve the suffering of those subjected
to war, oppression, disease, and natural disasters. Please be generous, the Holy Father
depends on our support.

Gospel - Luke 16:1-13
In today's readings, we learn of God's overwhelming forgiveness for those filled with
arrogance and who turn away from the way God points out. We learn, too, of the
transformation that is possible when the sinner comes to his senses. As Catholics, we know
how to forgive and to be forgiven, how to heal and be healed. We celebrate Jesus' mercy in
the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Are you Catholic? Let is show.

We are already responding to many needs through the St. Vincent de Paul Society, our Youth
Ministry, the Bereavement Committee and others. One of our projects has been to develop a

YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE
"Those who are in favor of life today have responsibilities of a political character.
The problems of family and life are not just for Catholics' they are the patrimony
of humanity. It is said that 'abortion is an issue for Catholics,' or the rejection of the
use of the human embryo. The same happens with the unity of matrimony. It is not a matter
solely for Catholics; it is an issue of contemporary man who, if he does not respect the
fundamental law of life and human dignity, betrays himself. The great suicide of humanity
today is the denial of values without which we cannot life." - Cardinal Alfonso Lopez
Trujillo, interview by Zenit News, Oct. 3, 200

Williams Sound unit into a hearing aid equipped with a telephone "T" coil.
For more information,
please call Linda Maslona at 839-2363.

ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND 1-HOUR EACH WEEK WITH JESUS
IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
Of the many graces received by prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, the greatest
by far is the sanctification of the adorer.
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL!
Spend an hour per week in silent adoration of Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament and
receive a lifetime of grace. Consider signing up for an early morning hour. Call Maureen
at 839-5044.
My Dear Parishioners,
September 11, 2001 will be remembered as one of the blackest days in the history of the
United Sates. Hijacked planes rammed the World Trade Center, toppling the twin towers. The
Pentagon was also struck and partially destroyed. Thousands of innocent people perished.
What happened was a heinous and violent act not only against the United Sates, but against
all mankind and God.
Although we will search for a reason why this happened we will never understand why
someone would commit such a crime against their fellow man.
Let us pray for every soul that has been touched by this terrorist act, for all those who
were killed, for all those wounded, for all those who lost someone they loved. Let us pray
for our country in hopes that such a day will never be written in our history books again.
God has not and will not abandon us through this crisis. He will send his angels to
comfort those who lost someone they love and he will give us the strength to deal with
this tragedy. He will send us His healing light.
God Bless America,
Msgr. James Lichtenthal, Pastor
REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS:
The people in our country
Healing for the injured
Eternal rest for those who have died
Comfort for those who mourn
Peace in the world
God of perfect peace,
violence and cruelty can have no part with you.
May those who are at peace with one another
hold fast to the good will that unites them;
may those who are enemies forget their hatred
and be healed.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
"The Lord says: my plans for you are peace and not disaster; when you call to me,
I will listen to you, and I will bring you back to the place form which I exiled
you." - Jeremiah 29:11, 13, 14

OUTREACH
Our Parish has recently developed a Parish Outreach under the direction of Linda Maslona.
The purpose of the Outreach is to learn more about the needs of our parishioners and to
develop ways in which to assist those in need. In doing so, we can bring our parish
together as a concerned community, loving and caring for our fellow neighbors.
We are already responding to many needs through the St. Vincent de Paul Society, our Youth
Ministry, the Bereavement Committee and others. One of our projects has been to develop a
Ministry to the Sick. If you or your loved one is unable to come to Church and would like
to have Communion brought to your home, or if there is someone in the hospital or in a
nursing home, and would like someone to visit them, please contact Linda at 839-2363.

FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for all you do - sometimes we forget - but never do we stop thinking of you.
2) Thank you for all the caring and considerate people in our country.
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND 1-HOUR EACH WEEK WITH JESUS
IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
Everyone experiences today a deep need for personal prayer. The burden of being a faithful
Christian is becoming heavier in a non-Christian world. To those who are heavily burdened
and find life difficult, Jesus said, "Come to me" and "I will refresh
you." This hunger for prayer increases with the many trials and heartaches which many
encounter in family life or the business world. Jesus dwells with us in the Blessed
Sacrament to fulfill His mission of "healing the brokenhearted."
DO YOU DESIRE MORE JOY & PEACE IN YOUR DAY?
Are you longing for more joy and peace in your day? Let Jesus fill your heart! Visit Our
Savior at the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. Scheduled Adorers are welcome between 12:00
noon and 5:00 p.m. Become an afternoon adorer by calling Linda Yerke at 839-1889.
PARISH ROSARY CHAIN
If you have an intention to be added to our Parish Rosary Chain or if you would like to
become part of the Rosary Chain Ministry, please call Margaret Babich at 839-0335.
"TRAVELING" STATUES OF JESUS AND MARY
If you & your family would like to invite the statues of Jesus & Mary into your
home for 1 week, please call Martha Johns at 839-2268 & leave a message. While you
have the statues, you are encouraged to say the Rosary. The statue of Mary is Our Lady of
Guadeloupe, the patroness of the America's, and the patroness of the unborn. These statues
have become so popular over the past few years, that two sets are now available. Consider
the benefits of this ministry.
MEN'S PRAYER GROUP

PRAYER AT A TIME OF NATIONAL DISASTER
God of perfect peace,
violence and cruelty have no part with you.
Accept the prayers we offer for our nation,
and especially those who have died or been injured,
all whose lives have been changed by the disasters that
have taken place in New York City, Washington, and
throughout our nation.
Give strength, wisdom, and direction
to President Bush and his advisors
as they address the magnitude of this tragedy.
For the families and friends of the injured,
and of those who have died,
uphold and sustain them with your grace.
For all emergency personnel
and all others responding to this disaster:
protect them; give them strength, courage, and
sound judgement.
Give wisdom to all of us at this time of
confusion, perplexity, and pain.
Keep us from rash judgement.
Restore tranquility, peace and soundness to our lives.
We ask this through our Savior and Lord. Amen
LIGHTS FOR THE WORLD CONVENTION SPEAKS TO
OUR YOUTH DURING THIS TIME OF NATIONAL TRAGEDY
Last Sunday, Sept. 16th, teens from CTK King Youth Group & adults attended the annual
meeting at Christ the King Seminary. All attendees listened to the worlds of Bob Halligan
Jr, singer & songwriter for the rock band Ceili Rain, who shared details and powerful
emotion of his faith journey. Our group then attended a leadership workshop conducted by
the Diocesan Youth Department where we discussed ways to enhance parish youth ministry
programs.
Our afternoon liturgy celebration was marked by solemnity as we mourn in the wake of last
week's devastating events. We were reminded in the homily given by Fr. Bill Quinlivan who
spoke and sung passionate works about our world needing us all. We are called to be
beacons of light whose strength through faith will allow us to shine and darkness. We are
called to bring peace to our homes, schools, and communities and to remain steadfast in
prayer. As Fr. Bill reminded us in singing the lyrics of a song by Michael W. Smith,
"This is our day, this is our dance
And, we must leave nothing to chance
" The day's powerful liturgy where over 350 people were of one voice united in
prayer for peace left us with the hope that we, as Catholics and disciples of Jesus, can
view this tragedy through the lens that our faith provides. As we seek justice and pray
for all victims of this tragedy, we must be prepared to confront the evils of racism that
have accompanied last week's acts of terrorism. Our light must shine as we take part in
relief efforts, as we pray and comfort each other, and as our nation prepares for the next
step - all with the knowledge that God is with us.
YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE
"Lead me from death to life, from lies to truth.
Lead me from despair to hope, from fear to trust.
Lead me from hatred to love, from war to peace.
Let peace fill our heart, our world, our universe.
Peace. Peace. Peace."
-Mother Teresa
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TO HALT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM THREAT
Legislation is pending in Albany that would threaten the ability of religious
organizations, such as this parish, to abide by the teachings of our faith. Under serious
consideration are requirements for all group health insurance plans to cover the costs of
artificial contraceptives and reproductive technologies that result in human embryo
destruction. this would force Catholic agencies (parishes, schools, hospitals, nursing
homes, etc) that provide health benefits to their employees to pay for drugs and
procedures that he Church finds morally objectionable.
In the back of church are postcards addressed to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver &
Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno. Bishop Mansell urges you to mail these cards so that
we can let our legislative leaders know where Catholics stand on this issue. For further
info on this important issue, contact the NYS Catholic Conference at 518-434-6195 or visit
www.nyscatholicconference.org.

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS

with sensitivity to the needs of the poor. As Catholics, we are challenged to make daily

CHILDREN'S LITURGY - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Children's Liturgy has been very popular for the last few years, but the committee may
have to decrease the number of Sundays this option can be offered to the children if we do
not get some volunteers to join us in this ministry. No experience is necessary and your
time commitment would be only one Sunday a month. Training/mentoring will be provided.
Please call Debbi Testa at 834-3586 if you are interested.

A PRAYER SUNG TO THE TUNE OF "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL"
O beautiful, for faith - fields songs, that set this nation's course;
for psalms and hymns and spirituals, which stirred a mighty force;
American, America, God sang his song in thee,
and formed thy soul with trustful praise in songs of unity.
O beautiful, the children's song, the struggling heart set free,
and those who care, when souls despair, whose acts are charity;
America, America, God sings his song in thee,
that justice and religious truth may set all peoples free.
Sing and Pray with the Music Ministry
ST. VINCENT de PAUL CLOTHING DRIVE
Plan ahead! On Sat., Nov. 17th & Sun., Nov. 18th, trucks will be parked in the large
school parking lot, ready to receive your donations. Last year, through your generosity,
we were able to collect three truckloads of clothing. These clothes are sorted and then
sold for a nominal fee at the St. Vincent de Paul Store. Also, some clothing is given away
or sent overseas. If they are in poor condition, they are bailed for rags. Nothing is
wasted.
FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for 43 years of a wonderful marriage!
2) Thank you for love and support of family and friends through difficult circumstances.
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND 1-HOUR EACH WEEK WITH JESUS
IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
Pope Paul urged each church to have a Blessed Sacrament chapel because he foresaw the
difficulties ahead. This is what the documents of Vatican II recommend in their decree on
the sacred liturgy. And this was done at the insistence of Pope Paul, not to take away
from devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, but to help bring about a 'new era of eucharistic
piety' by making our Lord available to His people." (from Worthy is the Lamb by Fr.
Martin Lucia, MSS)
"TRAVELING" STATUES OF JESUS AND MARY - If you & your family would like
to invite the statues of Jesus & Mary into your home for 1 week, please call Martha
Johns at 839-2268 & leave a message. While you have the statues, you are encouraged to
say the Rosary. The statue of Mary is Our Lady of Guadeloupe, the patroness of the
America's, & the patroness of the unborn. These statues have become so popular over
the past few years, that two sets are now available. Consider the benefits of this
ministry.
OUTREACH
The purpose of our parish Outreach Program is to learn more about the needs of our
parishioners and to develop ways in which to assist those in need. In doing so, we can
bring our parish together as a concerned community, loving and caring for our fellow
neighbors.
