A CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE ON POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITY The Gospel of Life must be proclaimed, and human life defended, in all places and at all times. The arena for moral responsibility includes not only the halls of government, but the voting booth as well. Laws that permit abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide are profoundly unjust, and we should work peacefully and tirelessly to oppose and change them. When we elect our lawmakers in America, we influence the moral character of this nation for better or for worse. We get the public officials we deserve. Their virtue, or lack thereof, is a judgement not only on them, but on us. Because of this, we urge our fellow citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically, and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest.

JUBILEE 2000: CATHOLIC INSTITUTIONS The human person joins together with others to form institutions and organizations that serve humankind. Catholic organizations and institutions are incorporated into the structural unity of the Roman Catholic Church. We are united with the local bishop and the Bishop of Rome. Catholic organizations are illumined by the traditions of the Church, which have been passed on through Church teachings.

Gospel - Mark 13:24-32

REFLECTION: Generosity of the Poor Both of the widows in today's readings put their health and very lives in jeopardy because they trusted God. When Elijah told the widow that her jar and jug would not be empty, it was probably hard for her to fathom. She knew how much she had and it was only enough for one more cake. Even so, she trusted. The second widow had very littler money and what she did have, she gave to the ministry of her synagogue. She trusted that the money would be used for God's purposes. Jesus knew that she would go without something in her own life in order to offer this gift. In the end, her gift, as it would be counted in the treasury, was quite small; but in the realm of God's kingdom, she gave the most. It was not so important what these widows gave as it was how they gave it. They gave without selfishness to the good of others. They put themselves in jeopardy in order to serve another person. On the brink of starvation, they risked their own health and even their lives in order to give to others. There is a significant similarity between their gift and the gift Jesus gave each of us. The widows offered their lives for God. Jesus offered his life for us.

CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT A collection will be taken next weekend for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. The mission of this campaign is twofold: (1) to raise funds to support organized groups of poor & low-income people to develop economic strength & political power, and (2) to educate Catholics about the Church's social teaching & poverty in the US, & to promote a greater sense of solidarity with the poor. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development offers a hand up, not a handout. Groups funded are organized by low-income people to improve their communities through affordable housing, job training, worker-owned cooperative businesses, support for working families with children, and other self-help initiatives. Please be generous!

EUCHARISTIC PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL The Adoration Chapel is located at the top of the stairs, when entering the Church from the circular driveway on Lamarck Drive. These doors are unlocked from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. Please feel free to make a visit to the Chapel. You do not need to be a scheduled adorer in order to come and pray. However, don't be afraid to take a fixed hour for fear that there may be times that you can't make it. There is a substitute system in place. "You have nothing whatsoever to fear from Him. Get up. He is calling you!" (Mark 10:50)

FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors: 1) Thank you for giving my husband the grace and courage to bring my daughters home. 2) Thank you for the guidance to raise our children correctly.

ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND 1-hour each week with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament: This is a personal invitation from Jesus to you! "Jesus waits for us in this Sacrament of Love." Pope John Paul II, Redeemer of Man

PARKING REMINDER FOR THE ADORERS: As of November 1st, the Town of Amherst prohibits parking on the street past Midnight. Please park in either the circular driveway (when possible) or in the parking lot. If you park on Lamark Drive, you will be ticketed.

YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE In her book, The Long Loneliness, Dorothy Day says: "we've all known the long loneliness. I have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community." We in the pro-life community know that ours is a lonely work. It is the loneliness of the long distance runner. We are a community bound together with love for life, and with love for one another. What is happening in our country in regard to the destruction of innocent human life is something diabolical, something that can be driven out only by prayer and fasting, supported and within the context of all the pro-life efforts nationwide.

This very beautiful ceremony is called the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens. After the Mass, come to the Chapel Meeting Room to meet the candidates and their sponsors, and to welcome them into our community. Together we will grown in faith as we share our experience of Christ. If you have any questions regarding RCIA, or know of someone who may be interested please call Celeste Kersten at 839-2146, Fr. EVERYDAY THANKSGIVING by Judy Vekasy from Ann Landers Column

Even though I clutch my blanket & growl when the alarm rings each morning, thank you, Lord, that I can hear. There are many who are deaf. Even though I keep my eyes tightly closed against the morning light as long as possible, thank you, Lord, that I can see. There are many who are blind. Even though I huddle in my bed and put off the effort of rising, thank you, Lord, that I have the strength to rise. There are many who are bedridden. Even though the first hour of my day is hectic, when socks are lost, toast is burned and tempers are short, thank you, Lord, for my family. There are many who are lonely. Even though our breakfast table never looks like the pictures in magazines and the menu is at times unbalanced, thank you, Lord, for the food we have. There are many who are hungry. Even though the routine of my job is often monotonous, thank you, Lord, for the opportunity to work. There are many who have no job. Even though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day-to-day and wish my circumstances were not so modest, thank you, Lord, for the gift of life.

YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE Think about this: The right to life is the very first right named in the Declaration of Independence. In Thomas Jefferson's memorable formulation, the United States of America was founded on the recognition that all human beings are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, & the pursuit of Happiness." To devalue life is to strike at the very foundations upon which the American republic was erected.
