will be taking part in a 24-hour vigil in the Adoration Chapel. May God bless and have
mercy on our troops during these times of strife and uncertainty. May God bless us with

A PRAYER FOR OUR VETERANS
Comforting God, we are blessed with many freedoms. We are blessed with the freedom to
worship you, and we exercise this freedom everyday when we share our faith with our
family. Thank you for all the freedoms we are blessed with. Today we remember those who
spent part of their lives with our nation's armed forces. We pray for those who died to
give our country the freedoms we have. We ask you to comfort their family members who
still grieve. Amen - Family Faith through the Year, 1998-1999
DO YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER SERVING OUR COUNTRY IN THE MILITARY, AT HOME OR OVERSEAS?

given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in our parish to help them carry out their good
works for people in need. This is their main income for the year, and your monetary
contributions are greatly appreciated. A special Thanksgiving Day envelope can be found in
your packet of Church envelopes. It may be returned on Thanksgiving Day or in the Sunday
collection. The St. Vincent de Paul Society is a non-profit organization and 100% of its

PRAYER SHAWLS - Every Wednesday evening, a group of dedicated women meet in the Church
Library from 7-9 pm, to knit Prayer Shawls. As we begin our knitting, an opening prayer is
offered, asking God's love be woven into the yarn in the knitters hands and each
participant prays for those in need After the shawls are complete they are blessed. It is
our hope that those who receive the shawls might know God's comforting and healing
presence. If you or someone you know are ill, or going through a difficult time, we would
like you to receive a prayer shawl. They are free of charge. Please call the Rectory at
839-1430.
CHILDREN'S MISSALS - There are now Children's Missals available in baskets at the entrance
of the Upper Church and in the back of the Lower Church for use during the Mass. Active
participation in the Liturgy, rather than just listening, adds a different dimension to
the Mass. Children are encouraged to use a missal to help them become more familiar with
the Liturgy of the Word. We hope that the use of the missals will help them to have a
stronger foundation, which will aid them in their faith journey. What better way to
develop a fuller understanding of God's love than through personal involvement?
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND ONE HOUR WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
"We should strive to keep our hearts open to the sufferings and wretchedness of other
people, and pray continually that God may grant us that spirit of compassion which is
truly a gift of God." - St. Vincent de Paul.

DO YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER SERVING OUR COUNTRY IN THE MILITARY, AT HOME OR OVERSEAS?
Stop and see the bulletin board in the Vestibule of the Upper Church, which has been
dedicated to honor our friends and relatives who are in all arms of the military. This
display gives a visual reminder of the brave, dedicated men and women serving our country,
and reminds us to keep them in our personal prayers, as well as our prayers at Mass. We
will be glad to put up a photograph of your family member, listing their name, rank, arm
of military and assignment - whether overseas or at home. If you do not have a picture,
please send in their name and information and we will place it on the bulletin board. This
will be an on-going display, so please continue to send in the names and pictures. Our
thanks to the Respect Life Committee for designing such a compelling display.

be meeting in the Chapel Meeting Room.
On Friday, December 21st from 9 a.m.-Noon and Saturday, December 22nd at 9:00 am, we will
be decorating the interiors of the Upper and Lower Churches and the entranceways. We will
use the Chapel Meeting Room as our gathering point. If you are interested in assisting

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING
The Feast of Christ the King marks the last Sunday of the liturgical year. Pope Pius XI
established the Feast in 1925, and our parish, Church of Christ the King, Snyder New York,
was designated as the first church in the world to take that name. Next Sunday begins the
liturgical year, with the First Sunday of Advent. But what do we need to understand about
this feast day? The following is taken from Pope Pius XI, Encyclical Letter, QUAS PRIMAS,
#11-12:
Christ Himself speaks of His Own kingly authority in His last discourse, speaking of
the rewards and punishments that will be the eternal lot of the just and the damned; in
His reply to the Roman magistrate, who asked Him publicly whether He were a king or not;
after His resurrection, when giving to His Apostles the mission of teaching and Baptizing
all nations, He took the opportunity to call Himself king, confirming the title publicly,
and solemnly proclaimed that all power was given Him in Heaven and on earth. These words
can only be taken to indicate the greatness of his power, the infinite extent of His
kingdom. What wonder, then, that He Whom St. John calls the "Prince of the kings of
the earth" appears in the Apostle's vision of the future as He Who "hath on His
garment and on His thigh written 'King of kings and Lord of lords!'." It is Christ
Whom the Father "hath appointed heir of all things"; "for He must reign
until at the end of the world He hath put all his enemies under the feet of God and the
Father."
It was surely right, then, in view of the common teaching of the sacred books, that the
Catholic Church, which is the kingdom of Christ on earth, destined to be spread among all
men and all nations, should with every token of veneration salute her Author and Founder
in her annual liturgy as King and Lord, and as King of Kings. And, in fact, she used these
titles, giving expression with wonderful variety of language to one and the same concept,
both in ancient psalmody and in the Sacramentaries
