PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS: A Movie, A Ministry
If you haven't seen this movie starring Will Smith as a hard-working man who ends up
homeless with his young son, then you're missing a quality film. Beyond the entertainment
value though, the film shows the special crisis a family that becomes homeless
experiences. Homeless shelters don't keep families together. In fact, there are only two
agencies in WNY specifically designed to keep families together throughout the crisis of
becoming homeless. Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) is one of those.
IHN mobilizes existing community resources by using churches for overnight lodging
while coordinating with social service agencies to get the family back into a home. Here
in WNY 60% of IHN guests are children with 68% of the families headed by single mothers,
1% are single fathers but 31% are two-parent families. In shelters, fathers are separated
from their families. A single mother is separated from a teenage son. Family structure and
support is broken and it is understandable how much more traumatic the situation that the
children, mothers, and fathers experience when they lose their home, their belongings, and
then even lose the people in their lives. It was reported recently about a family living
in their car for months because their choice was: the car and staying together or a
shelter - separated.
IHN in Buffalo has organized 11 host congregations and 33 support congregations to host
families one week at a time.
" Ascension Lutheran Church (ALC) on Main at Burroughs is a host congregation, which
means that the family is housed in their facility. So ALC provides overnight lodging and
meals for up to 3-4 families for one week, every three months, on a rotating basis.
" Christ the King Church is coordinating an effort to act as a support congregation
for Ascension Lutheran. We have been asked to cover Tuesday staffing.
What does the volunteer staff of the support congregation do?
Cover three shifts - one Tuesday, once every three months.
" Dinner Shift - 4:30-7:30 p.m. - The volunteer makes a dinner at home or in the
facility's kitchen, and eats with the family and socializes with them.
" Evening Shift - 7:00-10:00 p.m. - The volunteer spends the evening with the family
playing games, talking, etc
.
" Overnight Shift - 9:30 p.m.- 7:30 a.m. - The volunteer(s) have a separate sleeping
area and are there if any emergencies arise during the night. In the morning, the family
goes to social service agencies to work on finding housing and any other needs.
The minimum for volunteering is one adult per shift, but many couples and families
volunteer together. For example, a woman took the dinner shift and brought her school age
children to play with the kids who were being housed. One older couple took an evening
shift and brought their older grandchildren who helped one child with homework and read
books to another child. People are eager to have their children and grandchildren
participate. They do so knowing that IHN families are screened before being brought into
the program and that the families and volunteers are there to be in a safe environment.
Be part of the success!
" IHN in the Greater Buffalo can boast that 76% of their guests have secured safe,
affordable housing within 32 days. IHN keeps in touch with its clients too. In fact, 99%
of the guests from 2005, are still in their own homes!
" Christ the King is committed to supporting the host congregation at ALC. The next 2
dates for ALC are September 22nd-29th and December 8th -15th. Our target dates as the
support congregation are Tuesday, September 25th and Tuesday, December 11th.
" To sign-up, email Kathleen@mattar.com or call Kathleen at 839-3776.

KNITTERS WANTED!
The Prayer Shawl Ministry has been at Christ the King for 3 years - and we have knitted,
blessed and distributed over 400 prayer shawls to those who are sick, grieving or going
through a difficult time. The response has been overwhelming. In order to keep up with the
demand, we need knitters or crocheters who are willing to spend a couple of hours a week
doing what we love to do. What better way to use your God given talents than to help those
who are in need. We meet every Wednesday evening in the Church Library from 7:00-9:00 p.m.
All you need to bring are needles - size 11 or 13 - we supply the yarn. For more
information, call Linda Maslona at 839-2363.

COME JOIN THE KNITTING FUN

"Someone asked him, "Lord will only a few people be saved?" Jesus
answered, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate,"' - Luke 13
GOD'S ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION
You've asked. Did God answer? Maybe He did and you didn't understand it. Is it like God is
speaking a foreign language and you only understand a word here and there? How can you
understand God's language?
When I was a kid, there was a boy in my neighborhood who had cerebral palsy. He was in a
wheelchair and his speech was garbled. He hung out with us when he was able to be outside.
If a grown-up talked to him, they would always ask one of us kids what the boy said and
we'd repeat it for them. One grown-up said to me, "how can you understand him?"
"I don't know," I remember answering what I thought was a weird question.
"I guess if you hang around him enough, you understand him."
Just hanging around enough. God's language comes simply to some but most of us have to
hang around a lot to understand Him. And that's not a bad thing at all. Fortunately, here
at Christ the King we have the Eucharistic Adoration chapel where all are invited to
"hang around" with God.
Think now about dedicating time to be with God. Right now we have need for new adorers.
Some of the adoration hours no longer have scheduled adorers and are being covered by
generous substitutes. Any visit to the chapel, scheduled or unscheduled is wonderful.
However, look at your schedule and choose an hour now to dedicate to being with God. If
anyone is available to sign up for Thursdays from 3pm-4pm, it is greatly needed. For that
specific hour, contact Kathleen Mattar at 839-3776. You are welcome to take any hour, just
make sure that it fits your schedule and then call Martha Johns at 839-2268.
DO YOU HAVE AN HOUR TO GIVE EACH WEEK?
Scheduled adorers are needed for certain hours in the Adoration Chapel. There is a list on
the bulletin board out side of the Chapel door that shows the times that adorers are
needed. Check it out and make more time for God in your life. Please call the Rectory for
info.

MORNING MASS SCHEDULE
Beginning on Tuesday, September 4th, the regular morning daily mass schedule will resume,

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
"I felt strange at first because I had been away from the church for awhile. But as
the weeks went by I felt so welcome and sure of myself. I also loved coming to class
because it was very calming and peaceful for me." The RCIA process is one where
adults journey with team members to hear their stories and learn together as we move to a
closer relationship with Jesus. We welcome anyone who has not yet been baptized, been
baptized either in the Catholic faith or a Christian faith that used the Trinitarian form,
but never received First Eucharist and/or Confirmation, or who would just like to update
their knowledge of the Catholic faith. We invite you to join us this fall beginning
mid-September. For more details call Renée at the Rectory at 839-1430 or email
www.rvilla@ctksnyder.com.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families
For the selfless acts they perform
For us in our time of need.
And give us peace.
I ask this in the name of Jesus,
Our Lord and Savior. Amen.
