JOURNEY IN FAITH AND GRACE
The Restructuring of our Parishes and Schools (continued from last week)
" As the Diocese of Buffalo prepares to restructure its parishes and schools, there
is a two-fold purpose: 1) To ensure that parishes will have the membership, leadership and
resources to be vibrant centers of Catholic life. 2) To foster academically excellent and
financially sound Catholic schools that will give witness to Gospel values through their
environment, teaching and activities.
" In order to understand better the need for the restructuring of our parishes and
schools, it might be helpful to review some of the specific challenges that face our
diocese today. Population decline and a poor economy have affected every sector of life:
financial institutions, health care, schools, private businesses, and local government. We
have seen downsizing, outsourcing, merging, and restructuring in both the private and
public sectors. In addition to a net loss of population, WNY has seen a significant shift
of population from the cities to the suburbs. For example, the City of Buffalo has half
the population it had in 1950 and has lost 11% of its population since 1990. Yet there are
still 55 Catholic churches in the city, that, on average, are only 22% filled during
weekend Masses.
FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
1) Thank you for the safe delivery of our beautiful little grand child.
2) Thank you for the closeness of my father and sister;
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND
1 HOUR WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant
that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to
understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is pardoning
that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life." - Prayer
of St. Francis
RECHARGE YOUR SPIRITUAL BATTERY!
MAKE THIS LENTEN SEASON YOUR GIFT TO YOURSELF
We are very excited to announce that Mission V will take place the evenings of Saturday,
March 25th - Saturday, April 1st, on the parish grounds. Mission is a time for prayer,
personal reflection, education, laughter and enjoyment. It is a wonderful spiritual event
that offers you the opportunity to experience Jesus in a deeper sense in the company of
fellow parishioners. It consists of an eight-night spiritual journey. Each night is
different and includes speakers, liturgy and personal reflection. With all the pressures
of daily activities Mission offers a chance to take a break for yourself and focus on your
Faith. People having completed Mission comment how the week went by quickly and that the
experience was very rewarding. For more information please call Bill or Renée Newton at
839-5556 or Melissa at the rectory at 839-1430.
YOUTH NEWS
The Teen Youth Group of CTK is an organization in which all high school teen parishioners
are automatically members. Teens are encouraged to participate in any or all events.
Members who feel a strong dedication and commitment to serve should consider a position on
the CTK Youth Council. This committee helps to schedule events that seek to increase
faith, encourage friendship, & promote fun in a welcoming atmosphere. The leadership
council works directly with adult coordinators, volunteers, and parish teens to plan
programs & invite you to become an active part of teen life at CTK Church.
For info on items listed below, call Mrs. Maryann Peer (835-4977) or Mrs. Debbi Testa

serve in the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room from 9:00am-1:00pm. Call Ceil at 835-7826 for
car pools and more details.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES - Children are among the most vulnerable and Catholic Charities
strives to protect the young ones by keeping their safety and best interests at the top of
all we do for children and youth. From visitation programs to day care, from mental health
to foster care services, their well-being is our focus. We want to continue to involve and
educate students and youth on the community of Catholic Charities - the staff, the people
we help and the people like you, who help Catholic Charities - together we are one. One
For All.
WE ALL SEE THE FACE OF CHRIST
The St Vincent de Paul Society of Christ the King collaborated with all of our parish
people of goodwill in relieving needs, generously donating toys and food this Christmas,
making NO distinction to those served, because in them, We all See the Face of Christ.
Below are letters of thanks:
St. Martin de Porres
"Needless to say the toys made Christmas a joy for our children, who otherwise would
have little under their tree. Your money, helps us to continue our ministry. You are all
in our prayers. Thank you for making us aware through your caring, that we all are the
'Body of Christ.' "
Our Lady of Lorretta
"Our parish continues to be a beacon of hope on the West Side. Many are refugees
struggling day-to-day for the basic necessities. You have brought sunshine to their lives
during the holidays.
"God Bless All."
Holy Cross Church
"The poor of our neighborhood will benefit from your generosity. May you all be
blessed."
St. Patrick Food Pantry
"Any assistance we receive throughout the year helps us in our pantry to function
properly to assist clients to get nutritional food for daily living, and to give them the
'little' extra at the holidays with food and toys. God bless all who do contribute
generously to help those less fortunate and may you all enjoy peace at Christmas and a
healthy, prosperous New Year."
Harvest House
"May God bless you
all, as you have so generously blessed others. Thank you"
St. Francis / St. John the Baptist
"Thank you for reaching out in the spirit of Christ by sharing your gifts with the
less fortunate in the Black Rock community. You made a difference in our area of the
city."
Annunciation
"Thank you for the toys, food and your donations to the families here who are so
grateful."
Blessed Sacrament Parish
"As you are doubtless aware, the inner-city area which we serve has needs, many which
are home visits, assistance with vouchers for clothing and furniture. Your donations will
be put to good use. Many Thanks!"
Please continue to give and to put money in our Poor Boxes; and be generous always in
Christ's home.

JOURNEY IN FAITH AND GRACE
The Restructuring of our Parishes and Schools (continued from last week)
As the Diocese of Buffalo prepares to restructure its parishes and schools, there is a
two-fold purpose: 1) To ensure that parishes will have the membership, leadership and
resources to be vibrant centers of Catholic life. 2) To foster academically excellent and
financially sound Catholic schools that will give witness to Gospel values through their
environment, teaching and activities.
Parish membership and average weekend Mass attendance have been declining for many years.
In just the past ten years, parish membership is down 12% and Mass attendance has declined
13%. Catholic baptisms during the same period declined 33%. Some parishes have neither the
membership nor finances to support the ministries necessary for full parish life. A
disproportionate amount of the parish budget is often needed to maintain old and
underutilized buildings. Where a parish has a school, an average of 50% of the parish
income supports the school, leaving few financial resources for the parish's other
ministries.
ROSARY CHAIN
There are a group of parishioners who pray a decade of the rosary for special intentions
requested through the Parish Rosary Chain. If you have an intention for the Rosary Chain,
or if you would like to become part of the Rosary Chain Ministry, call Irene Wingerter at
632-0646. The Rosary Chain is ideal for those who wish to keep their intention private.
PARISH OUTREACH / AREA EVENTS
¢ On Tuesday, February 14th, St. Valentines Day, all are invited to prepare and help
serve in the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room from 9:00am-1:00pm. Call Ceil at 835-7826 for
car pools and more details.
¢ Cell Phones Needed - Do you have old cell phones lying around, clogging up your junk
drawer? Haven House is a shelter for victims of domestic violence that collects old cell
phones for victims' emergency use. Please drop your old phones off at the Rectory (during
business hours) before February 24th. They will be collected and donated to Haven House.
If you are in need of information regarding Domestic Violence, please call the 24-hour
hotline at 884-6000.
¢ Annulment Writing Workshop - Here's a chance for anyone having trouble writing their
annulment papers to get it done in one weekend. The session will be held on Friday,
February 24th, from 7-10 pm and Saturday, Feb. 25th from 8am-3pm in St. Benedict School
Cafeteria. The $20 registration fee includes snacks, lunch and supplies. To register, call
Barbara Wyse at 633-7786.
"
GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD
' When we pray the Our Father, we
ask God to provide our food. The majority of us receive sufficient food. Others do not. We
can be our Father's instrument by providing bread for the needy. You do this by your
contributions to the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Boxes.
MISSION - A NEIGHBORHOOD THING!
What do the following people have in common?
JoAnn Mikulec Joe Bochynski Maureen Butwin
Tom Phillips Rita Sodus Tom Corey
Carrie & Joe Carriello Pia and Gene O'Connor Tom & Marcia Smith
Rich & Jo Anne Greco Paul & Lorrie Klonowski Steve & Fran Roth
These friends/neighbors/parishioners have all made Mission. Over 180 people, including
those on this list, made their Mission at Christ the King Church. Feel free to talk with
someone who has made Mission to hear his or her thoughts and experiences. How were they
inspired to make Mission? Would you like to have a share in the peace and love of Christ
and your fellow parishioners?
MISSION V will take place at Christ the King the evenings of Saturday, March 25th
through Saturday, April 1st. Participation is limited! For more information or to
register, call Bill or Renée Newton at 839-5556 or Melissa at the Rectory Office at
839-1430. Thank you.
You Say: "I can't do it"
God Says: You can do all things
"A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him, 'If you wish, you can make me
clean.'"
Question of the Week: How can you show acceptance toward someone who seems isolated?
Faith Response: Kiss a leper today. Show acceptance toward someone who is alienated
from your family, office, parish, or community. Offer that person an opportunity to
experience wholeness and love.
FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
1) Thank you for the wonderful weekend and for our successful retreat.
2) Thank you for helping my friend in his fight against drugs;
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND
1 HOUR WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
"God may not provide us with a perfectly ordered life, but what He does provide is
Himself, His presence, and open doors that bring us closer to being productive, positive,
and realistic Christians." - Judith Briles
ATTENTION SNOWBIRDS!
Before you head to your warm destination for the winter, please make a pledge now to
Appeal 2006 for Catholic Charities. Not only will it relieve your mind, it will help the
parish reach its goal by closing-Sunday. Appeal 2006 is April 2nd-April 9th. Call Catholic
Charities Appeal Department at 856-4494 to make your pledge.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES
In order to provide hope, we must have charity - or love. This Valentine's Day, please
open your heart to the senior who struggles to find affordable, livable housing, the
family who depends on a bag of groceries each month from a pantry to keep food on the
table or the teen who needs help with his or her education. Read about those we have
helped at www.1-for-all.org. Then respond with a generous pledge or donation.
Parenting Perspective: "Seeing one bad movie, watching an occasional violent TV
program, or trying out a violent video game is not generally going to scar a person for
life. A steady diet of the above, however, desensitizes our society, our families, and
ourselves to violence -- and the ante has been rising." (Raising Kids Who Will Make a
Difference by Susan Vogt). How can your family begin to make a healthy change in the
family media "diet"?

seasons of Lent and Easter. All voice parts are needed and are welcome to join with us in

spent as an offering to God during Lent, lending your voice to support and encourage the
congregation in their worship. Choral music is capable of presenting the Gospel message
with profound meaning, great beauty and sensitivity. Please contact Christina regarding
your participation this Lent at 839-1430 ext 212.
LENT IS COMING
Plan to attend the vicariate-sponsored Lenten Lecture Series on the first five Mondays of
Lent at 7:30 pm in various parishes. The theme for the series is: What people in the Bible
have to say to us today. Topics will include: The Scribes and Pharisees, Martha and Mary,
Our Lady, Judas and Peter. Mark your calendar! Plan to come and bring family members and
friends. More information next weekend.
THE WORK OF THE ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY is the Gospel message in action. I was
hungry, I was thirsty, I was a stranger, I was naked, I was sick, I was in prison. And you
cared.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
There are no Religious Education classes on Monday, February 20t. Classes will resume on
Monday, February 27th.
First Reconciliation - The children in our First Reconciliation program have begun
their sacramental preparation. We will begin to list the names of the students who are
making First Reconciliation on Saturday, March 4th. We are asking our parish to pray for
these children as they complete their studies for this sacrament. The following students
are in Renée Newton's, Joanne Wright's, and Ken Brechtel's classes: Matthew Boccio, Peter
Byrne, Alex Cacciotti, Emily Ciocca, Adam Galbraith, Michael Hidalgo, Gabrielle Lasher,
Emma Lister, Jake Maley, Emily Mason, Jessica Merrill, Sarah Noll, Andrew Schake, Ian
Smith, Madeleine Utz, Reed Bihary, David Cinquino, Alyssa Curtis, Sean Gibson, Derrick
Horning, Emma LaPrade, Brooke Marafino, Maxwell Marko, Jaelin Marong , Rachel Swiatek,
Stephen Vukelic, Rory Walsh, Maya Weber, Sarah Willard, Jack Brechtel, Jessica Ellis, and

VOCATION VIEW - In today's Gospel, people have difficulty believing that Jesus can
forgive sins. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we have a powerful sign of God's
mercy, understanding and forgiveness for those who are sorry for the sinfulness of their
lives. A priest becomes God's minister to visibly assure those seeking forgiveness, that
God's mercy is theirs. If you think God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Fr Leon
at 847-5535.

Catholic elementary school enrollment has declined 25% in the past ten years. Schools are
operating at 64% of capacity and tuition covers on 50% of per pupil cost. Parishes with
schools strain to subsidize their educational ministry often at the expense of other
parish needs. Financial constraints do not allow parishes to pay administrators or
teachers a salary commensurate with their credentials. The average starting salary for an
elementary teacher with a BA is $17,600 (2004-2005)
The Diocese of Buffalo is also experiencing the same decline in priestly vocations that
has been experienced throughout the western world. The number of active diocesan priests
serving in the diocese has declined 30% since 1995 and that decline is projected to
continue. There are fewer religious order priests serving in the diocese than there were
10 years ago.

RENEWAL OF PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
On the weekend of February 25th & 26th, Fr. Larry Villone is scheduled to speak at all
of our Masses on Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. Fr. Villone is a dynamic Missionary and
preacher. He is highly successful in opening chapel of Perpetual Adoration in many
parishes throughout the U.S. He has personally opened up over 100 Perpetual Eucharist
Adoration Chapels in the last several years. In addition, Father Villone has given many
missions on devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, Adoration, Eucharistic spirituality, as
well as a variety of other inspirational topics. As a Missionary of the Blessed Sacrament,
he zealously strives to achieve the goal of Pope John Paul II to have Perpetual
Eucharistic Adoration in every parish and Christian community around the world.

1) Thank you for the benefactor who paid for my health insurance.
2) Thank you for our beautiful angel in heaven. Thank you for bringing her into our lives.
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND
1 HOUR WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
"I am your refuge and your strength. Even though the earth gives way and the
mountains fall into the heart of the sea, do not fear. I am an ever present help in
trouble." - Psalm 46:1-3
"It is I, I who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no
more." - Isaiah 43
Question of the Week: What role does forgiveness play in your life?
Faith Response: Practice the bottom line of faith. Forgive those who trespass against
you and yours. Celebrate the sacraments of reconciliation and healing. Above all, remain
close to the Eucharist, our reconciliation with the God of forgiveness.
I Can Only Imagine
what it will be like at Mission V.
I can only imagine what my eyes will see in the faces of my fellow parishioners.
I can only imagine what my heart will feel when we sing the songs of our savior.
I can only imagine the feeling that comes from being surrounded by goodness.
I can only imagine how the speakers will touch my very soul with their words.
I can only imagine the awe at praying together on our knees to our God.
I can only imagine what the food will be like.

Question of the Week: to whom or what you most "married": to your job, your
worries, your money, your spouse, your ego?
Faith Response: Fast for the flesh: to get in touch with the hunger of the world, to
purify the body, to cleanse the consumer impulse, to remember your dependence on God.
Feast for the heart: to celebrate love and friendship, to give thanks for blessings, to
share your plenty with others.

and feelings, even when they seem crazy. A support group is a safe haven where we can
talk, crazy, share our anger, guilt and fears with those who understand and care. The
Bereavement Support Group will consist of six sessions beginning Tuesday, March 14th, and
every other Tuesday through May 24th, from 7:00 until approximately 9:00 p.m. The program

Although our diocese has made some modest adjustments over the past 15 years, a more
intensive process of restructuring is necessary in order to ensure that parishes and
schools will be able to carry on effective ministry in the 21st century. Ina spirit of
good stewardship, we need to restructure in order to have the number of parishes and
schools that are truly needed and that our resources can support.
THE ROSARY CHAIN is made up of a group of parishioners who pray a daily decade of the
