YOUTH CONVENTION NEWS

Twelve teen delegates from Christ the King Parish joined youth from throughout the diocese for the 49th Annual Diocesan Youth Convention in Niagara Falls, the weekend of Feb. 17 & 18.

Keynote speaker Brian K. Johnson, Diocesan Director of Youth Ministry for the Catholic Diocese of Galveston-Houston spoke passionately about our faith and addressed our youth on issues of cultural relationships, social justice and personal growth and commitment. Dynamic workshops, speak-out sessions, fellowship and prayer, dances, coffeehouses, and a special closing liturgy, all were part of making the convention a great experience.

Thanks to the generosity of so many of our parishioners, our teens were able to deliver over 1,200 tee-shirts which contributed to the Diocesan total of approximately 31,000 shirts that will be sent to the missions in Nicaragua. Our parish came in 5th place in the tee-shirt contest for being able to dress our delegate - Chris Gammell put on 159 shirts in a 2-minute time limit!

We are proud of each of our delegates who represented our parish and thank our junior advisors and chaperones. We wish to give a special thank you to Dick and Jean Maslona who give up a weekend's sleep to take care of our group each year at the Convention.

Senior CTK Youth Council Member and this year's Diocesan Youth Board President, Deb Aquilina, presided over the convention and shared steps of her faith journey and this year's experiences to the entire delegation of teens and adults during her closing speech. Her personal witness was inspiring and faith building. As President, Deb has worked hard in helping to organize Diocesan programs such as this past convention for all teens in all parishes. We thank her for her work and dedication to this position and for representing our parish in this very special way.

Congratulations to Senior Youth Council Members Matthew Testa and Eric Voglmayr who were two of the recipients of this year's Manus Christi Award. The Manus Christi, or Hands of Christ, is an award given to graduating seniors who have shown leadership and extended service to their parish and community. We take great pride in congratulating these tow teens for their work and commitment to their Church and the value they place on serving others.

The ED Argy Award for Community Service was award to the Teen Youth Group of Christ the King Parish. This award is given to parishes who have dedicated time and creative effort to serving those in need. We received this recognition for making service an important component of our Youth Ministry Program, and in particular for our Christmas Gift Basket Project for the elderly who are home bound or in nursing homes.

A SUGGESTION FOR LENTEN SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Spend an hour with Jesus in the beautiful Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. "Committing to the time is difficult in this busy world," Father DeLuca acknowledged. "It's a question of proper priorities. Each moment we spend in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament deepens our union with Christ and makes our minds and hearts more peaceful on earth and enables us to live a happier life."

We must not despise politics, but rather retrieve it from those who would pervert it for evil purposes. … Let us resist the self-appointed experts who pretend to know better than we ourselves how we should raise our children. Let us take back our children's education from proselytizing secularists. Let us not starve the United Nations, but let us put in on a wholesome diet. Let us pledge ourselves to play whatever role we can in building the civilization of life and resisting the culture of death." Taken from: Family and Society: International Organizations and the Defense of the Family by Mary Ann Glendon

YOUR TALENT IS NEEDED!
For the past 3 years our parish has presented "The Reflections on the Way of the Cross" on Good Friday. This prayerful event has touched many people, including those who choose to take a part in the presentation. Planning is now underway for the presentation. People are needed to:
Ø Direct/Organize
Ø Perform the Monologues
Ø Help on Stage Crew
Ø Be Responsible for Lighting
You do not need any special talents, just a desire to help portray one of the most important events in our lives as Christians, the crucifixion and death of Christ. If you would like more information, or if you want to help, please call Father David at 839-1430. May God Bless You.

A LENTEN THOUGHT …
We begin to realize the magnitude of God's love for us by looking at the crucifix. This portrays the image of the suffering Christ lifted upon the cross, absorbing the full brunt of the evil of our sins. All life's cruelties, hatreds and injustices are concentrated in that cross planted on the hill of Calvary. One of the amazing facts about the passion death of Christ is that it has become the supreme proof of God's love. When all else fails, the down and out the despairing, and the lonely are drawn towards that far-off cross on the hillside, aware that there is someone to turn towards. The upright-cross, once the sign of shame and humiliation, become the channel of healing grace. The tree of death becomes the tree of victory. - by Desmond Knowles

March 22nd, St. Christopher's - The Day Christ Died

CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2001
Target Weekend - March 31st-April 1st

Hope is REACHING. Hope is TRYING, again. Hope is OVERCOMING.
You should have received in the mail, your Catholic Charities donation request, which includes a letter from Msgr. Lichtenthal, a card with your name on it, and a return envelope. Please indicate the amount of your donation on the card, enclose it with a check or cash and return it on or before THE WEEKEND OF March 31st - April 1st - in the collection basket.
Your support of this year's Appeal is vital. Please consider increasing your donation this year by pledging a larger amount and making payments in several installments. A gift of $100 works out to less that $2 per week. Try to join the Large Gift donor group by giving a minimum of $250. This is what makes our parish go over the top every year.
If you are employed by a firm that "matches gifts" to charitable institutions, secure a form from your personnel office and forward the completed form to the Catholic Charities Appeal Office. Your contribution is used to bring strength and stability to the community. Please give generously!

YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE
"The immortal genius of Michelangelo portrayed on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel the moment when God the Father communicated the gift of life to the first man and made him "a living being." Between the finger of God and the finger of man stretching out to each other and almost touching, there seems to leap an invisible spark: God communicates to man a tremor of his own life, creating him in his own image and likeness. That divine breath is the origin of the unique dignity of every human being, of humanity's boundless yearning for the infinite." - Pope John Paul II, Urbi et Orbi Message, 12/25/00

FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for peaceful solutions to problems.
2) Thank you for encouraging me to forgive my dear friends, so that we finally came
together after two years apart. Amen!

ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND 1-hour each week with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament: "When the Most Holy Sacrament is not revered and loved scandals will abound, faith will languish, and the Church will mourn. On the other hand, if this Sacrament is worthily and frequently received and adored, peace will reign in Christian hearts, the devil will lose power, and souls will be sanctified 'as many as received Him, to them He gave the power to be made sons of God.'" (Fr. Frederick A. Reuter, K.C.B.S)

EUCHARIST MISSION - Rev. Joseph DeLuca will be giving a Eucharistic Mission on March 26, 27 & 28 at Blessed Sacrament Church (10 French Rd., Depew). Fr. DeLuca will be speaking on the Eucharist and the place of Adoration in today's world Liturgy and how Eucharistic Adoration adds to your spiritual life. Come hear him speak and be inspired to take a greater active role in the Eucharistic Liturgy.

A LENTEN THOUGHT …
God of all compassion, Father of all goodness …
We acknowledge our sinfulness, our guilt is ever before us:
When our weakness causes discouragement,
let your compassion fill us with hope
and lead us through a Lent of repentance to the beauty of Easter Joy.
(Taken from Lenten Messages From the Old Testament by Rev. Charles E. Yost)
