CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2002
Target Weekend - March 16 & 17
Be A Hero. Give Hope. This week you will be receiving in the mail, your Catholic Charities
donation request, which includes a letter from Msgr. Lichtenthal, a card with your name on
it, and a return envelope. Please indicate the amount of your donation on the card,
enclose it with a check or cash and return it on or before THE WEEKEND OF March 16-17, in
the collection basket.
Your support of this year's Appeal is vital. Please consider increasing your donation this
year by pledging a larger amount and making payments in several installments. A gift of
$100 works out to less than $2 per week. Try to join the Large Gift donor group by giving
a minimum of $250. This is what makes out parish go over the top every year.
If you are employed by a firm that "matches gifts" to charitable institutions,
secure a form from your personnel office and forward the completed form to the Catholic
Charities Appeal Office. Your contribution is used to bring strength and stability to the
community. Please give generously!

PIPE ORGAN "PORTRAITS" - IV
Some flutes are useful as "solo" stops like the Concert Flute. This is an open
wooden flute on the manuals that resembles the orchestral flute in timbre (color of
sound). This is both melody and ensemble stop. When any key is depressed on the organ it
sounds a certain pitch. The Concert Flute is an 8' (sounds at unison where we sing) and a
8' (sounds 1 octave above unison) stop on the organ. Next time: More "Organ"
vocabulary

PIPE ORGAN "PORTRAITS" PART V
What is an organ stop? Simply a "stop" is a row of pipes, one for each key. Some
pipes may be given a special windchest of their own. We hear an 8' stop sounds at the
unison, whereas the 4' sounds one octave about the unison. At CTK we have a Flute Traverso
8' which sounds at the unison as a fundamental and neutral sounding "stop." To
add a little brightness to the tone, we need to combine the 8' flute with another stop
that sounds at 4'. Next Time: Stings on the Organ!

FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for graces received during our retreat.
2) Thank you for my marriage.
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND
1-HOUR EACH WEEK WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration (PEA) is the modern-day version of Jesus asking his
apostles in faith to go out into the deep and cast their nets on the starboard side. (Jn
21:6) More people are willing to participate in PEA than part-time adoration. The
commitment to Jesus is what attracts them.

CTK ORGANIZATION HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
CHILDREN'S LITURGY
The Children's Liturgy is designed to make the Gospel message and the weekly celebration
of the Liturgy of the Word relevant to the lives and experiences of the young children of
our Parish. At the 9:30 mass on Sundays during the school year, (except for the second
Sunday of each month), boys and girls, three years and older are invited to join their
friends and one of the three teams of dedicated volunteers in the Upper Church for their
own Liturgy of the Word. After lighting the group's candle and singing an opening song,
the children hear that Sunday's reading from the Children's Lectionary which is presented
in language that the children can easily understand. Then, with the help of that week's
team leader, the group reflects on the meaning of the readings and discovers how the Word
of God relates to their own lives.
The Celebration of the Word continues with the Creed and a Prayer of the Faithful that
grows from the intentions presented by children. They then rejoin their families at the
offertory. Through a separate Liturgy of the Word for children, we hope to introduce to
them the important aspects of God's message by allowing them to progress at their own pace
and give them the opportunity to offer their thoughts and reflections following the
pattern of normal congregational liturgy. We are always looking for volunteers to help us
with this ministry. If you are interested, call Debbi Testa at 834-3586 or John Weinholtz
at 689-6453.

10th.

these groups, please call her at 839-1430, ext. 212.
PIPE ORGAN "PORTRAIT" PART VI
The "String" family of stops is very bright and characterized by plentiful
"harmonics" (frequencies that each pipe creates as its tome quality). The Viole
d'Orchestre is the name for the orchestral violin, an imitative string of 8' manual pitch
or 16' (1 octave lower than unison) pedal pitch. The Voix Celeste is an undulating string
stop at 8' on the manuals. Next Time: More Strings.
LENT ACTION
As you focus on God's mercy and compassion, decide upon simple acts of kindness that you
can do at your place of work, home or school. In the spirit of Lent, perform your acts of
kindness quietly and with humility. Allow God to use you as an instrument of His mercy.
Add a cross to your family center prayer space. Pray for each other's actions and for
family unity. Take time at home to share with each other.
CALLING ALL COOKS - SPRING "FUN" RAISER
The Teen Youth Group is hosting a parish cooking contest on Sunday April 21st from
1:30-3:30 p.m. in the School Gym. Our parishioners are invited to submit one or more
entries in the following categories: Appetizer, Main Course, Side Dish, or Dessert, as
well as a special category for chefs - 12 years and under. All entries will be judged, and
winners will be awarded 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize based on taste and presentation. Watch the
bulletin for registration forms.
FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for lifting a severe depression.
2) Thank you for my new job.
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND
1-HOUR EACH WEEK WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration is a bit of heaven on earth because in Perpetual
Eucharistic Adoration Jesus is continuously adored by the faithful here on earth, just as
He is adored by the angels and saints in heaven.
GIVING TIME
There is a time for study, a time for discussion, a time for decision, a time to act. Act
on the Gospel message: "Love you neighbor" and share your coins in the St.
Vincent de Paul boxes. Act now during Lent, a special time for Almsgiving.
YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE
Help rebuild the culture of life during this time when the culture of death appears to
have the upper hand
If you can't end an international crisis, you can calm a family
one; if you can't send relief to refugees, you can provide a meal for a shut-in; if you
can't cure anthrax, you can drive someone to the doctor; if you can't end abortion, you
can pray at a clinic or at home; if you can't end war, you can love your neighbor.

MISSION
In an effort to reach out to more of our parishioners and to provide opportunity for their
spiritual growth, we would like to bring MISSION to Christ the King Church.
MISSION started in 1975 at St. Gerald's parish in Buffalo. Since then, through the
encouragement of various priests and the dedication of many people, and with the
intercession of the Holy Spirit, MISSION has spread to many parishes in the diocese.
The MISSION is an eight-night spiritual journey. It is a time for education, personal
reflection and growth, prayer, laughter, sharing, community and the development of an
appreciation and personal acknowledgement that Jesus is a friend and brother.
We are planning to have MISSION 1 at Christ the King Parish in October, this year. If you
have made the eight-day MISSION at another parish, please drop a note in the collection
basket to let us know (see form below). Be sure to list the church and date of your
MISSION.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2002
Be A Hero. Give Hope.
As of Tuesday, March 19th, our parish donated $147,740 to Catholic Charities. Today is
Closing Sunday of Appeal 2002. If you haven't already done so, please make your gift
today. All we need is a pledge - every little bit helps. Please help us meet our goal of
$10 million. Thank you and God bless you for your generosity.
For more information on Catholic Charities call
856-4494, or visit our website at www.ccwny.org
DURING THE EASTER TRIDUUM
THE ADORATION CHAPEL WILL BE CLOSED
The Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel will be closed from Wednesday, March 27th at
6:00 p.m. until Monday, April 1st at 7:00 a.m. According to Church Law, "Under no
circumstances may Perpetual Exposition take place during the Easter Triduum."
RCIA - RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
The RCIA Team invites all parishioners to attend the Easter Vigil on Saturday, March 30th
at 7:00 pm. to welcome our three RCIA Candidates: T.J. Grace, Amanda Shaw, and Keith
Sullivan, as they become fully initiated in the Roman Catholic faith. The Easter Vigil
will begin in a darkened Church with the lighting of the fire and the Pascal Candle. As
the procession moves into the church, each person in attendance will light a candle
signifying Christ entering the Church. Scripture readings will be proclaimed, baptismal
vows will be renewed, Amanda and Keith will receive Confirmation and First Eucharist, and
T.J. will be confirmed. Immediately following Mass a reception will be held in the Parish
Library for everyone so that they can congratulate our RCIA neophytes. Please come and
share with us this very special event.
HOLY LAND COLLECTION
On Good Friday, a collection will be taken for the Holy Land. For Catholic Christians, the
Holy Land is a special home across the sea, where Christ was born, lived, preached, worked
His miracles and died. Today, the Holy Land is in need. Most Christians who live near and
care for the Holy Places in Jerusalem and Palestine are very poor or foreign missioners in
a foreign land. For over 800 years, the Franciscan Friars have been charged with the care
of the Holy Places. Our Good Friday collection supports their ministry. Please be as
generous as you can with this special act of almsgiving.
EASTER HOLY WATER - HOLY WATER BOTTLES
Easter holy water will be available after the Easter Vigil Mass, and for the next few
weeks, in the sanctuary. Free, empty holy water bottles will be located near the holy
water container in the Sanctuary for you to fill. We encourage parishioners to use the
holy water in your home to bless yourselves and your children. This is a wonderful
tradition to practice. Holy water is available to all throughout the year.

CTK ORGANIZATION HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
WOMEN OF GRACE BIBLE STUDY
Women of Grace Bible Study provides women of the parish with the opportunity to apply Holy
Scriptures in a practical way to their daily lives. Meetings are held twice monthly where
women share answers to questions from books written specifically to help one grow in
holiness and knowledge of Scriptures and the Catholic faith. The tools utilized are the
textbook (titles change yearly), a Catholic Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic
Church. Women of Grace is a dynamic, interesting study whereby every woman is an important
contributor. Meetings are held every other Monday from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the Chapel
Meeting Room.

PIPE ORGAN "PORTRAIT"
We know that the string family of stops has plentiful harmonics (frequencies) and that
many strings are "imitative" of their orchestral member. The viola is a very
versatile string of somewhat deeper timbre than the viole d'orchestra we learned of last
time. It is a 16', 8' or 4' like most strings and has echo, muted and celeste forms. The
echo is a softer, less intense sound. The muted sound has no harmonic content. The celeste
provides the undulating quality in a definite pattern of beats. Next time: What do we
hear?

MISSION
In an effort to reach out to more of our parishioners and to provide opportunity for their
spiritual growth, we would like to bring MISSION to Christ the King Church.
MISSION started in 1975 at St. Gerard's parish in Buffalo.
We are planning to have MISSION I at Christ the King Parish in October, this year. If you
have made the eight-day MISSION at another parish, please drop a note in the collection
basket to let us know (see form below). Be sure to list the church and date of your
MISSION.

Parish has donated $179,387, almost $20,000 more than last year at this time. THANK YOU
for you generosity!!!
If you still have not returned you Catholic Charities donation, and wish to do so, please

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS NEXT SUNDAY!!!!
DON'T FORGET TO "SPRING FORWARD" &
TO TURN YOUR CLOCKS "AHEAD" ONE HOUR.
HAPPY EASTER!!!
Greeting in the Risen Lord. How fortunate we are to be a Resurrection people; people
immersed in the belief that Jesus has conquered sin and death for us by His death and
glorious Resurrection.
As we gather at this time of year, renewed and refreshed in our faith, we join together as
a parish family to renew our Baptismal promises and our fidelity to the Risen Lord and His
Church. May God's blessing remain with all of you as we celebrate together and sing our
"Alleluias" until the Lord shall come again.
On behalf of our priests and sisters who serve here, I wish each of you a Blessed Easter.
Many thanks for your thoughtfulness in cards and gifts this Holy Season.
In Christ our King,
Msgr. James Lichtenthal
Father David Bellittiere
Father Joe Sicari
Sister Mary Ellen Tucker, OSF
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR RCIA CANDIDATES
The RCIA is a process through which newcomers are welcomed into the Roman Catholic Church,
and others complete their initiation. We are proud of our three candidates, who are fully
entering into our Catholic Community. Those of you attending the Easter vigil celebration
are fortunate to witness Keith Sullivan being Received into the Church; Amanda Shaw and
Keith making the Sacrament of Eucharist; and then Amanda, Keith and T.J. Grace, receiving
the Sacrament of confirmation. They have been studying the Catholic faith since September,
and have grown considerably in their spirituality. Let us pray for T.J., Amanda and Keith
- as we celebrate with them as they join our Church family.
EASTER HOLY WATER - HOLY WATER BOTTLES
Easter holy water will be available after today's Masses, and for the next few weeks, in
the sanctuary. Free, empty holy water bottles will be located near the holy water
container in the Sanctuary for you to fill. We encourage parishioners to use the holy
water in your home to bless yourselves and your children. This is a wonderful tradition to
practice. Holy water is available to all throughout the year.
EASTER THANK-YOU'S EXTENDED TO:
¨ The Art and Environment Committee, for the beautiful display of Easter flowers in both
of our Churches;
¨ Dan Staszak for all the extra work he's done to help prepare our churches for the
Easter celebrations;
¨ Christina Shrewsbury, Directory of Music Ministry, Teen Ensemble, and Youth Choir and
the Parish Choir who helped make this Easter season so special, especially for Palm
Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday's "Reflections on the Last Words of Christ,"
the Easter Vigil, and at the Easter Sunday Masses. Thanks also to Bryan Eckenrode, Kevin
Durkin, Robb Zahm, for their help during this Lenten season.
¨ The Teen Youth Group who offered the parish a special presentation of the Stations of
the Cross on Friday, March 22nd. Participating in this prayerful service were: Ellen
Cardone, Greg Havas, Amy Panczakiewicz, Anthony Scott, Mike Sima, Jenn Testa, Matt Testa
and Lorraine Villa.
¨ Our Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Altar Servers and Ushers, for their dedication to
their ministries which assists the priest during the Mass.
BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT MEETING
When we lose a loved one by death, we are wounded. Just as a wound does, we need to heal
from within, to express our thoughts and feelings, even when they seem crazy. A support
group is a safe haven where we can talk, cry, share our anger, guilt and fears with those
who understand and care. Our second Support Group Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April
3rd, at 7:00 pm in the Msgr. McMahon Church Library. All are welcome to attend. For more
information call Linda Maslona at 839-2363.
FIRST FRIDAY
Friday of this week is the First Friday for the month of April. Masses will be at the
regular times, 6:55 and 8:00 a.m.
ROSARY AND ALTAR SOCIETY
The Ladies of the parish are invited to join the Rosary and Altar Society as they recite
the rosary after the 8:00 a.m. mass on Friday, and then go to the Wehrle Restaurant for a
Dutch-treat breakfast. If you are interested, please call Clara Syty at 839-0517 before
noon on Thursday, April 4th. All women of the parish are invited.
THE ART OF DYING WELL
(You Only Get One Chance!)
Parish Outreach will sponsor an evening with Fr. John Mergenhagen on Tues., April 16th at
7:00 p.m. in the Upper Church. He will be speaking on "The Art of Dying Well"
(you only get one chance). All are invited to attend. Refreshments will follow in the
Church Library.
Using September 11th as a wake-up call, this evening is designed to help us in a healthy,
positive way to accept death as a part of the life cycle. We will come to understand why
it is more important to have a philosophy about death than about life. The "balancing
act" will enable us to face death with plans ranging from making our will to
designing our funeral liturgy. Then facing the other direction, we look forward to a long
life, cherishing every day and living every moment to the fullest.

In one of the most successful seasons in recent memory, both the Varsity (8th Grade)
Girls, and Varsity Boys Basketball Teams advanced to the "Final Four" of the
Diocesan Playoffs.
Not to be content with that, our girls beat SS. Peter & Paul (Hamburg) 35-25 to earn a
spot in the Diocesan Championship. Unfortunately, our Girls lost a tough battle to
cross-town rival St. Gregory's in the finals. In the history of CTK Girls Basketball, only
two of our teams have advanced this far, the other being the Jack Walter coached team of
1988. Congratulations to Coach Tim McCarthy and his crew for a great season!
The Boys fell one game short of the Diocesan Championship when they dropped a 46-41
decision to defending champ Nativity (Orchard Park). CTK ended their season as champions
of the St. Joe's Tournament, the St. John Neumann League, the Elmwood Franklin Tournament,
and the Christ the King Spring Invitational Tournament.

FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for my ex-husband going to confession after many years and his return to
the Church
2) Thank you for a healthy pregnancy;
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND
1-HOUR EACH WEEK WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
Prayer is a way of life which allows you to find a stillness in the world where you're
open to God's promises and where you find hope. In prayer, you encounter God in the midst
of the turmoil, distress and joy, and in the loneliness of your own heart.
MISSION
In an effort to reach out to more of our parishioners and to provide opportunity for their
spiritual growth, we would like to bring MISSION to Christ the King Church.
MISSION started in 1975 at St. Gerard's parish in Buffalo.
We are planning to have MISSION I at Christ the King Parish in October, this year. If you
have made the eight-day MISSION at another parish, please drop a note in the collection
basket to let us know (see form below). Be sure to list the church and date of your
MISSION.
