FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for each blessing big and small and for each peaceful day;
2) Thank you for my husband finally asking for help;
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND
1 HOUR WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
"We sometimes fear to bring our troubles to God, because they must seem so small to
Him who sitteth on the circle of the earth. But if they are large enough to vex and
endanger our welfare, they are large enough to touch His heart of love." R.A. Torrey
EIGHT GIFTS THAT DO NOT COST A CENT, BUT ARE PRICELESS
1. The Gift of LISTENING
Really listen. No interrupting, no daydreaming, no

7. The Gift of SOLITUDE
There are times when we want nothing better than to be left
alone. Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to other.

IN THIS SEASON OF COLDS AND FLU, SNEEZING AND COUGHING
If you are sick, it would
be better for you to remain at home, rather than coming to church and spreading your
germs. If you have a cold, please do not receive the Precious Blood at Mass or extend the
Sign of Peace until you are well. REMEMBER: If you have difficulty getting around in good
weather, please stay home when it is icy or snowy. God understands.
NEW TEMPORARY DIOCESAN ADMINISTRATOR
The College of Consultors of the Diocese of Buffalo has elected Msgr. Robert J.
Cunningham, who has served as vicar general and chancellor of the diocese, as diocesan
administrator. Msgr. Cunningham, who also serves as pastor of St. Louis Parish, will
remain diocesan administrator until the thirteenth bishop of Buffalo is installed. The
vacancy of the diocesan see was created on December 18th, when the former bishop of
Buffalo, Archbishop Henry J. Mansell, was installed as the archbishop of Hartford.
Msgr. Cunningham said: "I am grateful for the confidence that the Consultors have
expressed in me and assure you of my willingness to assume these responsibilities.
I shall continue to serve the parishes and institutions of the diocese to the best of my
ability. I ask the faithful of the diocese to join me in prayer as we await the
appointment of a new bishop. I would like to take this occasion to wish all the people of
the diocese my prayerful best wishes at Christmas and throughout the New Year."
ST. VINCENT de PAUL
During the past year, you have brought comfort and peace to many of our parishioners by
your support of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. May the peace and joy of this Holy Season
be yours. "The Poor Boxes are the bread boxes of the poor."
CATHOLIC CHARITIES WISHES YOU A BLESSED AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Resolve to make a difference in 2004 - for Jesus said, "Whatever you do to the least
of my brothers, you do it to me." We help tens of thousands of your brothers and
sisters each year. A gift to the annual Appeal enables us to do that. For more about our
work and the many ways your gifts to strengthen our community, call Catholic Charities at
856-4494, or check us out at www.ccwny.org.

Louis Church and help celebrate the Mother Parish of the Diocese's 175th Anniversary.

been completely restored for this auspicious occasion. Mass will be followed by a sit down

the WNY Catholic, January issue to read about the Anniversary plans.
ST. MARY'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION - In 2004, St. Mary's HS will be celebrating the
school's 100th anniversary. In preparation for this, Don Monnin (1980) is compiling the
history of the school to be published in book form later this year. To complete the book,
he is seeking information from people who have attended St. Mary's HS or have stories
about the school the wish to share. He is looking for information regarding Sports
(All-Catholics, team records, championship teams, etc.); Theater (programs, cast lists,
etc.); Graduates (list of those who became priests, brothers, and sisters); photos of
historical significance, and stories of special memories. They are also planning a
permanent display on the Old St Mary's HS. Anyone who has memorabilia from the "Old
School", including souvenir bricks are encouraged to contribute them. Information can
be sent to "Mr. Don Monnin, St. Mary's High School, 142 Laverack Ave., Lancaster, NY
14086, by calling 683-4824, or e-mail history@smhlancers.org.
EPIPHANY BLESSING OF THE HOME
Epiphany is the traditional day for this blessing - but any day you can gather the
household during Christmastime is a good day for it. Write the following with chalk over
the front door of your home: 20 + C + M + B + 04. The numerals are those of the New Year.
The four crosses are the four seasons. C-M-B are the initials of the legendary names of
the Magi - Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. Recite the following blessing, and move from
room to room sprinkling the home with water, a sign of Jesus' baptism. Sing a carol such
as "We Three Kings" during this procession, say the Our Father, and then the
greeting of peace is exchanged.:
God of all time and space,
with Christmas joy we praise you
for the year gone by
and for the year we have begun.
May this home we have made
be filled with kindness to one another,
with hospitality to guests
and with abundant care for every stranger.
By the gentle light of a star
guide home all who seek you
on paths of wonder, peace and charity.
Fill the year with good gifts for all the world
as we join with the angels
in proclaiming your praise:
Glory in heaven and peace on earth,
now and forever. Amen.
COME CELEBRATE!
Infant of Prague Parish (921 Cleveland Dr) concludes their celebration of the feast of the
Epiphany on Tuesday, January 6th with an inspirational presentation by Fr. Duke Zajac
"Who do people say that Jesus is?". This is followed by a performance of Lessons
and Carols titled "Do you hear what I hear" performed by the parish music
ministries. Everyone is welcome. For more info call 634-3660.
CELEBRATE EPIPHANY
Remember: Christmas is a season not just a day.
" Develop a new family Epiphany tradition. Bake with your children and deliver your
bake goods to a local shelter or senior center. Read Christmas cards out loud and say a
prayer for the persons who sent them.
" Many families bake an Epiphany Cake. Some place three coins in the cake and each
finder becomes one of the "Kings." Name the Kings (Casper, Melchior and
Balthaszar) and read the scripture, Matthew 2:7-12. For fun - role-play the story using
the statues in your family crèche. Sing "We Three Kings".
" Journey, by phone, in prayer or in person, to bring a message of peace to someone.
" The Kings journeyed across lands to bring gifts of peace. Spread peace by praying
for those you differ with.
" Say a prayer for someone who is waiting for a family member to return home from
military duty, and for those unable to be home for the holidays.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society exists to assist those in need. We can help those we know
about. We hear of their needs from people like you. Do you know of a parishioner in need
of temporary assistance? Please call the Rectory at 839-1430 and leave a message.
BREAK THE WAVES OF HUNGER
Did you know that 91,000 Western New Yorkers turn to soup kitchens, food pantries, and
other emergency food providers each month and that 40% of those helped are children.
Additional statistics show that people of color from various ethnicities are affected by
hunger and poor nutrition in greater proportion and in greater severity.
In response to this need, CTK Teen Youth Group will participate in a campaign called Break
the Waves of Hunger along with other parishes in our Diocese. We will be hosting a
Multicultural Food Drive and a dollar drive called the Souper Bowl of Caring on the
Weekend of January 31st - February 1st (Super Bowl Sunday). Donations will be collected in
the Church Vestibule. Please help us by participating however you can to make these drives
a success. Teens from our parish high school Youth Group will represent CTK at the
Diocesan Youth Convention where they will examine the causes of hunger and ways to help.
Multicultural Food Drive - Various items continue to be in short supply and include:
cornmeal, oatmeal (not quick oats), farina, rice, Goya brand canned and dried beans,
mango, guava, and pina juices, jalapeno peppers and refried beans; corn flour and canned
spinach, noodles, rice, soy and oyster sauce, & tea, beans, corn, macaroni &
cheese, & canned beans. (A complete list is posted in the upper foyer). Please do not
donate items in glass containers.
Souper Bowl of Caring - Teens will be collecting $1 from anyone wishing to donate to our
"soup pot" at the doors after all masses on Super Bowl Weekend. Money collected
will be sent to an area soup kitchen and food pantry.
YOUR SPIRITUALLY ADOPTED BABY - At Three Months
Your baby is quite active in the womb now - although his mother won't feel him for another
couple of months. If his mother's womb had a window, you could watch your spiritually
adopted baby squint, swallow and move his tongue. He can make a tight fist if you touch
his palm. He obtains the oxygen his body needs through the umbilical cord. The baby your
are praying for weighs one ounce. What a miracle he is!

icy or snowy. God understands.
BREAK THE WAVES OF HUNGER
FOOD COLLECTION - NEXT WEEKEND
Did you know that 91,000 Western New Yorkers turn to soup kitchens, food pantries, and
other emergency food providers each month and that 40% of those helped are children.
Additional statistics show that people of color from various ethnicities are affected by
hunger and poor nutrition in greater proportion and in greater severity. In response to
this need, CTK Teen Youth Group will participate in a campaign called Break the Waves of
Hunger along with other parishes in our Diocese. We will be hosting a Multicultural Food
Drive and a dollar drive called the Souper Bowl of Caring on the Weekend of January 31st -
February 1st (Super Bowl Sunday). Donations will be collected in the Church Vestibule.
Please help us by participating however you can to make these drives a success. Teens from
our parish high school Youth Group will represent CTK at the Diocesan Youth Convention
where they will examine the causes of hunger and ways to help.
"SOUPER" BOWL OF CARING - Teens will be collecting $1 from anyone wishing to
donate to our "soup pot" at the doors after all masses on Super Bowl Weekend.
Money collected will be sent to an area soup kitchen and food pantry.

RECHARGE YOUR SPIRITUAL BATTERY!
MAKE THIS LENTEN SEASON YOUR GIFT TO YOURSELF.
We are very excited to announce that Mission III will take place the evenings of March
20th-27th, 2004 on the parish grounds.
Mission is a time for education, personal reflection, prayer, laughter and enjoyment.
It is a wonderful spiritual event that offers you the opportunity to experience Jesus in a
deeper sense in the company of Fellow parishioners. It consists of an eight-night
spiritual journey. Each night is different and includes speakers, liturgy and personal
reflection.
With all the pressures of daily activities Mission offers a chance to take a break for
yourself and focus on your Faith. While a commitment of time is required, people having
completed Mission regularly comment how the week went by quickly and that the experience
was very rewarding.
For more information please call Dennis & Cathy Lennon at 835-7638 or Melissa at
the rectory at 839-1430.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING NOTES
Taken from the Parish Council Meeting of January 5, 2004
¢ A number of council members reported on a very rewarding Christmas season at our
parish. Nearly 40 volunteers helped in decorating the Upper & Lower churches,
including members of the parish Teen Youth Group. The Lessons & Carols program was
attended and enjoyed by many, as was the Holy Name Society Christmas program and concert.
Appreciation was expressed to everyone who helped make the season even more special for
our parishioners.
¢ Council members congratulated Msgr. Lichtenthal on the 15th anniversary of his
appointment as a Monsignor. He was given the rank of monsignor by Pope John Paul II on
January 5, 1989.
¢ Mission III at Christ the King was announced for March 20th through 27th, with
encouragement for all parishioners who have not attended Mission to participate in this
spiritual, faith-enhancing program.
¢ Some parishioners have expressed concerns to the council regarding disrespectful
behavior inside the church during Mass, and out in the parking lots. Discussions are
underway on how to improve the spirit of courtesy and cooperation among parishioners and
visitors to our church.
The next Parish Council Meeting is scheduled for February 2, 2004.

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Our parish began Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration in June, 2000. Outlined below are
thoughts and suggestions for the future.
WHAT DOES PERPETUAL ADORATION MEAN?
1) The Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel should never be left alone. An adorer should be
present at every hour, every day, every week, PERPETUALLY.
2) After 3 ½ years of Adoration at Christ the King, we have found that we should have
two scheduled adorers for each hour, so that we are assured that someone is in
attendance at all times.
3) The reason for two scheduled adorers, is if one adorer is ill, on a vacation, etc.
he/she can call their prayer partner to make sure that someone will be in the chapel.
4) Substitutes are not always available, especially for the nighttime hours.
WHAT IS THE PRESENT SITUATION?
1) As of the first week of January, we have 32 hours with only one scheduled adorer.
This means we need at least 32 more scheduled adorers.
2) In addition, 18 hours also have only one scheduled adorer. These hours are being
covered by 16 people, who adore for an extra 2 to 3 hours each week.
3) We realize many people truly love visiting the chapel, even on a daily basis, for a
brief
visit. However, for a successful Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration program, a commitment
should be made - a SCHEDULED HOUR each week.
4) Many times there are six to eight adorers present, only one of which is a scheduled
adorer.
WHAT STEPS HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO GET MORE SCHEDULED ADORERS?
1) At least 10 different promotions.
2) Many bulletin notices.
3) Bulletin notices in many other parishes bulletins.
4) Direct invitations.
5) Requests from the pulpit for the need of more adorers.
6) Updated charts showing needed hours. This chart is posted on the Adoration door.
7) Letters to parents of school children.
NOW IT'S UP TO YOU -
ISN'T IT TIME YOU BECAME A SCHEDULED ADORER?
Msgr. James Lichtenthal, Pastor
