LENTEN REGULATIONS
Abstinence: All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to abstain
totally from meat on the following days: Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent and Good
Friday.
Fasting: All Catholics between their 18th and 59th birthdays are also bound to observe the
Law of Fast on the following days: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves
limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance
may be taken on two other occasions in the course of the day.
Easter Duty: After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful
are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must
be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another
time during the year. This obligation may be fulfilled between Feb. 10th (First Sunday in
Lent) and May 18 (Trinity Sunday).
The Following Should Also be Noted:
1) RECONCILIATION: Catholics are bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins
at least once a year (Canon 989)
2) OTHER FRIDAYS OF THE YEAR: Catholics should be reminded that all other Fridays of the
year remain as days of penance, in prayerful remembrance of the Passion of Jesus Christ.
3) OBLIGATION: The obligation, which we have as members of the Church, to do penance is a
serious one. Furthermore, the obligation to observe, as a whole or
"substantially", the penitential days specified by the Church is a serious one.
4) While no one should hold himself or herself lightly excused, one should not become
unduly scrupulous. Failure to observe individual days of penance is less serious than the
failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days.
AN INVITATION: In the name of peace, and in union with the Bishops of our country, the
faithful of this Diocese are invited to add voluntary fasting to the practice of penance
during the Fridays of the year. Together with works of charity and service toward our
neighbors, this practice would become a sign of our commitment to conversion,
reconciliation and peace. (The Challenge of Peace, Art. 298)
TODAY WE WELCOME members of the Guild of St. Apollonia to the 9:30 a.m. Mass. The Guild

ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND
ONE HOUR WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
"What do I do during a Holy Hour? A Holy Hour is not a project to be accomplished but
an exercise of love. You can read a spiritual book, say the rosary, perform some act of
piety, which means something in your life, or you can just DO nothing. Just rest with the
Lord. The important thing is to realize that you need the time - apart from the liturgical
prayer of the Mass - where you experience God's personal care for you alone." Faith

PARISH OUTREACH
Special Needs: If you are a person with special needs know that there is a plan you can
put into place to deal with emergencies.
Four Things YOU Can Do:
1) We a buddy someone who will call you every day just to check in. If there were ever a
problem, they would know right away.
2) Write your Communication Tree: think about people you care about - and the people who
care about you. If there is an emergency, you'll want them to know that you're all right,
and the phone lines may not be working. Pick one person to be your contact, and let
everyone know who that will be. Have a backup person just in case.
3) Build a Go Kit: Put your emergency supplies, including phone numbers, medications and
prescriptions in a small plastic bag that you can pick up at a moment's notice.
4) Ask your family for Preparedness Supplies: Are you concerned about the cost or work in
getting important preparedness supplies? Do you find your friends and loved ones sometimes
give you gifts you didn't want, need or use? Ask them to help you become safe and prepared
by giving you some of the life-saving, timesaving or just stress-saving things you need.
It truly is a gift of love to give someone smoke detectors, a cell phone or any of the
items that belong in your GO Kit.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES - In order to provide hope, we must have charity - or love - and
this Valentine's Day, please open your heart to the elderly person who is lonely and needs
comfort; to the children for whom we work to eliminate neglect in their lives by providing
safe foster homes; or the family who needs their hunger nourished with a bag of groceries
from a pantry. Go to www.ccwny.org or www.1-for-all.org to find out more. Or call 856-4494
to make a pledge in support of Appeal 2008.
JOB TRAINING SITE - The Buffalo/Niagara Workforce Development Center is one of 6 sites
across NY State to offer workforce training. Under the auspices of the AFL-CIO, the
courses are not limited to union membership and are open to the general public, and are
for the most part free of charge. They are located at 3871 Harlem Rd in the Niagara
Capital Building, near Kensington and Wehrle. To obtain a listing of available courses for
February through June go to www.wnywdc.com or refer to the listing on the bulletin board
in the Church vestibule.
HEALTHY FAMILIES, HAPPY FUTURE, PART I - Do you wonder how to make a good marriage even
better? Are you worried about one of your children? Would you like the second half of your
life to be better than the first half? You might find the answers to these and other
questions at "Healthy Families, Happy Future, Part I" a series of 4
presentations designed to introduce Christian families to the principles of Family Systems
Theory. All 4 sessions will be held at Villa Maria College, 240 Pine Ridge Rd, Buffalo on

To Be Put on the Prayer List: Our policy regarding praying for the sick will be
strictly adhered to. The ill person must want to be on our list and prayed for in Church,
and it can be reported to us only by an immediate family member. We appreciate your
consideration in this matter.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they
protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our
time of need. And bless us with peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and
Savior. Amen.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION FOR ADULTS - Adult Catholics who have not yet been confirmed
are invited to consider receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our cluster of parishes
is sponsoring a short program for adult Catholics who have not yet been confirmed. This
sacrament, which is a blessing for all, is recommended for those considering marriage, and
is required for those who wish to be a sponsor for baptism or confirmation. Please call
Renée at the Rectory at 839-1430 by Monday, February 25th, to set up an appointment for a
conversation. If you have a copy of your baptismal certificate, please bring it with you.
Classes will be scheduled to enable most people to be confirmed at the Easter Vigil this

SIGN OF PEACE AND THE FLU SEASON - February is Latin for "fever month." The
flu season is upon us with unseasonal temperature fluctuations. The influenza virus may be
spread when a person coughs, sneezes, speaks, or touches another. Regularly washing hands
is a great precaution. To prevent the careless spread of flu viruses while exchanging the
sign of peace, those experiencing symptoms may consider acknowledging Christ's presence by
means other than a handshake. For example: a simple smile, slight bow, or other
appropriate gesture may be substituted. Especially during this season, consider being
sensitive to those, who refrain from handshaking and choose to recognize Jesus in their
neighbor by other customary means. - US Catholic conference of Bishops: Committee on the
Liturgy Newsletter, November 2006
COMMUNION FROM THE CHALICE AND THE FLU SEASON - Priests, deacons and extraordinary
ministers of Holy Communion are trained to practice good hygiene. Particularly during flu
season, all who distribute the Eucharist should be encouraged to wash their hands before
Mass begins. It is recommended that individuals who feel symptoms refrain receiving the
Precious Blood from the chalice. - US Catholic Conference of Bishops: Committee on the
Liturgy Newsletter, November 2004
