IN THIS SEASON OF COLDS AND FLU, SNEEZING AND COUGHING
If you are sick, it would
be better for you to remain at home, rather than coming to church and spreading your
germs. If you have a cold, please do not receive the Precious Blood at Mass or extend the
Sign of Peace until you are well. REMEMBER: If you have difficulty getting around in good
weather, please stay home when it is icy or snowy. God understands.
GUIDELINES TO STRENGTHEN OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
During the last several weeks, our attention has been directed toward the future of
Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Buffalo. The vital importance of educating all our
children is at the heart of our mission as a parish. We presently have 289 students in our
school, 500 students in the Faith Formation Program (religious education). We must be good
stewards of our resources to affect the lives of all our parishioners.
The Department of Catholic Education and the Office of Finance for the Diocese forwarded
to all parishes guidelines and financial initiatives to strengthen our schools. These
guidelines will be the framework from which our Parish, Finance Council and Parish Staff
will direct our school into the future. Listed below are some of those guidelines:
" By the 2009-2010 academic year, tuition and fee yield, must be 60% of per pupil
cost. The current deficit between per pupil cost and tuition/fees has placed significant
stress on parish and school financial stability. Tuition rates should be gradually
increased over 3 years to achieve a 60% tuition yield by 2009-2010.
" By 2009-2010, parish subsidy and tuition aid should not exceed 25% of per pupil
cost.
" By 2009-2010, mandated service income, fundraising and other revenue sources should
be 15% of the per pupil cost.
" Where possible, class size should be managed to attain a minimum size of 20-23
pupils per class. If multiple classes exist in the 10-15 student range, the number of
classes should be reduced to maximize class sizes.
" Tuition bills should communicate the actual per pupil cost, parish subsidy/tuition
aid and net tuition costs to families. Families should be asked to consider making a
charitable donation to the parish or school of the difference between the cost per pupil
and their tuition rate. These funds may then be directed to assist other families in need.
Increasing tuition rates and managing proper class sizes are difficult but necessary
financial actions that must be taken to ensure financial viability of schools for the
future. Historically, the Diocese of Buffalo has charged a tuition rate significantly
lower than most dioceses in New York State and the country. We realize that these measures
will be a hardship for some of our families. Through effective strategic planning,
marketing, recruitment and retention efforts, we will achieve financial stability of
schools, and provide tuition aid funds for student with demonstrated need.
"Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings. Blessed is the one who trusts in the
Lord." - Jeremiah 17
Question of the Week: By what aspect of your life or in which relationships have your
felt particularly blessed?
Faith Response: Multiply the power of blessing in the world. Bless children before they
sleep, bless meals before they're eaten, bless each new home or workplace or venture in
your life;

IN THIS SEASON OF COLDS AND FLU, SNEEZING AND COUGHING
If you are sick, it would
be better for you to remain at home, rather than coming to church and spreading your

Sign of Peace until you are well. REMEMBER: If you have difficulty getting around in good

ASH WEDNESDAY - This Wednesday February 21st is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the
Season of Lent and a day of fast and abstinence. Masses will be at 6:55, 8:00, Noon and
5:30 p.m. Ashes will only be distributed after Mass. A collection will be taken for Black
and Native Americans at all Masses. Please be generous.
THE "LITTLE BLACK BOOK" booklets with daily Lenten reflections for adults are
available in the back of church. A separate "Little Purple Book for Children" is
also geared toward children, and contains daily activities. Supply is limited, so please
share one with your family.
RULES AND OBLIGATIONS DURING LENT
Days of Abstinence - Those over the age of 14 are required to abstain from eating meat on
Ash Wednesday, all Fridays during Lent, and Good Friday.
Days of Fast - Those between the ages of 18 through 59, are asked to limit themselves to
one full meatless meal, and two smaller meals on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday
Acts of Self-Denial & Kindness - Acts of self-denial are encouraged on a voluntary
basis. Acts may include daily Mass, prayer, fasting, spiritual study, Lenten Devotions,
the Rosary, Stations of the Cross and deeds of mercy and kindness.
Easter Duty - Between February 25th (the first Sunday of Lent) and June 3rd (Trinity
Sunday) you are required to receive the Holy Eucharist, at least once.
Eucharistic Fast - Everyone (in good health) is required at all times, to fast 1 hour from
foods & liquids, before receiving the Holy Eucharist. Water & medicine never break
the fast.
THE FOLLOWING SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED:
OTHER FRIDAYS OF THE YEAR: Catholics should be reminded that all other Fridays of
the year, remain as days of penance, in prayerful remembrance of the Passion of Jesus
Christ.
OBLIGATION: The obligation which we have as members of the Church to do penance is
a serious one.
"The measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you." -
Luke 6
Question of the Week: Which enemies are hardest for you to love?
Faith Response: Choose deliberately between the "earthly" person and the
"heavenly" one within you each time you make a decision. Keep any eye out for
those seven sins: pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust; that can be fatal
to the heavenly person!
LENT IS COMING
instead of giving up something this year, come to a Lenten Lecture! Weekly talks are on
the Beatitudes in Today's World. Plan to attend the vicariate-sponsored Lenten Lecture
Series on the first five Mondays of Lent at 7:30 p.m. in various parishes. The first
lecture will be on Monday, February 26th at St. John the Baptist Church - 1085 Englewood,
Kenmore. Fr. Ron Sajdak will help us understand what it means to be clean of heart. The
other lectures are on Monday, March 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th. Learn more about your
Catholic faith. Discover new dimensions in your relationship with God and the church. No
Cost. No reservations required. Refreshments will follow the lecture.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP
When we lose a loved one by death, we are wounded. Just as a wound does, we need to heal
from within, to express our thoughts and feeling, even when they seem crazy. A support
group is a safe haven where we can talk, cry, share our anger, guilt and fears with those
who understand and care. The next Bereavement Support Group will be held in the Church
Library, and will consist of six sessions beginning Tuesday, March 6th, and every other
Tuesday through Tuesday, May 8th, from 7:00 to approximately 9:00 p.m. For more
information call Linda Maslona at 839-2363.
YOUTH CONVENTION UPDATE
11 teens from CTK represented our parish at the 55th Annual Diocesan Youth Convention last
weekend. Our parish Souper Bowl collection provided the essential items needed to compile
63 complete welcome packages for the Convention service project - "Welcome A Stranger
- A Collection for Migrant Workers".
CTK Teen Youth Group was honored as one of the 6 recipients from parishes throughout the
Diocese to receive the Ed Argy Award for Community Service. This recognition is presented
to parishes who demonstrate that service is an important part of their Youth Ministry
program. Our Coffee House for "War Kids Relief" was cited for this award as an
outstanding example of a community service event that exemplifies Jesus' Mission of
serving the needs of others in the world. Totally planned and hosted by our teens, this
event was held last spring and raised over $700 for children in Iraqi Orphanages.
In addition we wish to thank Jeff and Beth Ann Testa who chaperoned the entire weekend and
helped make it a great experience for our teens.

CTK PARISH LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT
Time and time again, CTK parishioners generously share their time and talent. The Grace
received in return is undeniable! This Lenten Season, our parish wishes to combine our
efforts, and hope that you'll join us!
Please join our parish community by participating in one of the following service
projects: an Easter Card for the VA Hospital; helping to supervise the Children's Liturgy;
a special hour at the Adoration Chapel; making Mission VI - March 24th-31st; participating
in the Easter liturgy as a singer or musician; helping at St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room;
volunteering at Habitat for Humanity; decorating the Altar for Easter; or knitting a
Prayer Shawl.
This project should be noted one of the yellow Lenten Service Project sheets, which are
located in the vestibule of the Church, near the Library next to our new "Peace
Post" Mailbox.
CIRCLE THIS DATE
Saturday, March 17th is the date of the annual CTK Lenten Mini-Retreat, sponsored by the
Holy Name Society. The retreat begins with an 8:00 a.m. Mass and will conclude before
Noon. The topic this year is A Lenten Experience, and Rev. Msgr. Dino Lorenzetti, a
retired Diocesan priest, is returning as the retreat leader. He is known for his
reverence, wit, compassion and religious intellect. Plan to attend this mini-Retreat.
There is no admission and no pre-registration is required.
ST. VINCENT de PAUL CLOTHING BIN - A clothing collection bin has been installed in the
large CTK School parking lot (close to Main St.). This is a CLOTHING ONLY bin and no other
material of any kind should be placed inside. Please make sure the clothing being donated
is usable and in good condition. Clothing should be placed in a plastic bag or a small
box. The bin will be emptied weekly by the St. Vincent de Paul trucks. IF you have
appliances or household goods, call 882-3360 for a special pickup.
"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." - Romans 10
Question of the Week: What makes a desert landscape ideal for the spiritual symbolism
of Lent?
Faith Response: Be thoughtful and deliberate in your Lenten observance this year.
Choose positive spiritual practices - participating in prayer, reconciliation, Stations of
the Cross, self-improvements - but also make room for self-denial.
THE "LITTLE BLACK BOOK" booklets with daily Lenten reflections for adults are
available in the back of church. A separate "Little Purple Book for Children" is
also geared toward children, and contains daily activities. Supply is limited, so please
share one with your family.
LENTEN LECTURE SERIES
instead of giving up something this year, come to a Lenten Lecture! Weekly talks are on
the Beatitudes in Today's World. Plan to attend the vicariate-sponsored Lenten Lecture
Series on the first five Mondays of Lent at 7:30 p.m. in various parishes. The first
lecture will be on Monday, February 26th at St. John the Baptist Church - 1085 Englewood,
Kenmore. Fr. Ron Sajdak will help us understand what it means to be clean of heart. The
other lectures are on Monday, March 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th. Learn more about your
Catholic faith. Discover new dimensions in your relationship with God and the church. No
Cost. No reservations required. Refreshments will follow the lecture.
HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT
WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO DO FOR LENT?
Lent is a great time to "turn it up a notch" in your faith journey.
What: Consider making MISSION.
Where: Christ the King.
When: March 24th - March 31st
What time: From 7 pm-10 pm each evening.
Why: This is truly a renewal and deepening of your understanding of our Faith as Catholics
and a greater awareness of Jesus in your life.
How: Share Him in a community of people who try to be more Jesus centered in their
everyday lives.
Reason: Get reacquainted with the Lord on a personal basis, to see, feel and be comforted
by His presence.
One more: This is for you! With all the pressures of daily activities MISSION offers a
chance to take a retreat from life and focus on your Faith.
