TODAY HELP BREAK THE WAVES OF HUNGER
WITH A MULTI-CULTURAL FOOD DRIVE AND "SOUPER" BOWL OF CARING
Did you know that 91,000 Western New Yorkers turn to soup kitchens, food pantries, and
other emergency food providers each month and that 40% of those helped are children.
Additional statistics show that people of color from various ethnicities are affected by
hunger and poor nutrition in greater proportion and in greater severity. In response to
this need, CTK Teen Youth Group will participate in a campaign called Break the Waves of
Hunger along with other parishes in our Diocese. We will be hosting a Multicultural Food
Drive and a dollar drive called the Souper Bowl of Caring on the Weekend of January 31st -
February 1st (Super Bowl Sunday). Donations will be collected in the Church Vestibule.
Please help us by participating however you can to make these drives a success. Teens from
our parish high school Youth Group will represent CTK at the Diocesan Youth Convention
where they will examine the causes of hunger and ways to help. MULTICULTURAL FOOD DRIVE -
Various items continue to be in short supply and include: cornmeal, oatmeal (not quick
oats), farina, rice, Goya brand canned and dried beans, mango, guava, and pina juices,
jalapeno peppers and refried beans; corn flour and canned spinach, noodles, rice, soy and
oyster sauce, & tea, beans, corn, macaroni & cheese, & canned beans. (A
complete list is posted in the upper foyer). Please do not donate items in glass
containers. "SOUPER" BOWL OF CARING - Teens will be collecting $1 from anyone
wishing to donate to our "soup pot" at the doors after all masses on Super Bowl
Weekend. Money collected will be sent to an area soup kitchen and food pantry.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT KNITTING - Come join the fun! We're making great scarves & doing a
lot of chatting. Our next project is going to be Prayer Shawls. These are knitted along
with accompanying prayers of dedication. After they're done, they will be given to
parishioners who are ill or grieving. What a better way for our parish community to reach
out to our fellow parishioners who are hurting. So, come, join the fun, every Wednesday
Night in February at 7:00 pm in the Church Library. If you are coming for the first time
& want to know what to bring, call Linda at 839-2363.
FIRST FRIDAY - Friday of this week is the First Friday for the month of February.
Masses will be at 6:55 and 8:45 a.m. After mass, ladies from the Rosary and Altar Society
will recite the rosary and will go to the Wehrle Restaurant for a Dutch-treat breakfast.
If you would like to join them, please call Virginia Harder at 839-0230 before noon on
Thursday, Feb. 5th. ALL WOMEN OF THE PARISH ARE WELCOME!

has a saying that you can use to help decide if the procrastination is warranted or an
escape. "If not now, when? If not me, who? If not here, where? Is there something
that you've been putting off until the kids are older or the house is paid off?
Relationships don't always wait for some day or one day"
ARE YOU BEING CALLED?

NEW HYMNS AND SONGS IN MUSIC ISSUE 2004
Welcome to another new year and another new Music Issue for 2004. This year's new music
includes a balance of both traditional songs and a more contemporary repertoire. Though we
feel most comfortable singing songs that are familiar to us, it is important to understand
that new music is being composed to meet the liturgical needs of our times. There are new
psalms, bilingual music, and a wealth of exceptional new hymn texts, set to well-known
hymn tunes.
For example, hymn #399, uses a new text written following the events of September 11,
2001, but embraces the famous melody Finlandia of hymn #624. The Music Ministry at CTK
invites you to open your heart and mind to some of these changes in the year ahead. Let us
build the kingdom of Christ together through prayer and music.
God's Blessings in the New Year!
Christina Shrewsbury, Director of Music Ministry
THE REAL MEANING OF LOVE - You are invited to "Come and See" on Thursday,
Feb. 5th to listen to Msgr. John Madsen as he cuts through the false notions of love and
explores what it means to truly love someone. The evening begins at 7:30 in St. Benedict's
Church with prayer, speaker, followed by a short break with refreshments. At 8:30 you are
invited to "Table Talk" where people gather in small groups to discuss
"Table topics" including bereavement, annulments, divorce & separation,
interfaith marriage, prayer, confession, bible basics, coping with cancer, & much
more. It's fun, it's free, & it's welcoming.
FUEL COLLECTION
A special Fuel Collection will be taken next weekend for the Church and facilities. Like
you, our heating bills are high, especially after our recent blast of Arctic air. Any help
you can give us to help with these bills would be appreciated.

YOUR SPIRITUALLY ADOPTED BABY - FOUR MONTHS - Well, your little baby now weighs 6
ounces. He has fingernails and eyelashes. He has his own unique fingerprints, which will
remain unchanged until he dies. His taste buds are working. His sense of hearing is
present at 14 weeks. There are no major bodily developments anymore. Your spiritually
adopted baby is already well-formed, internally and externally. All he needs now is time
to gain weight and grow strong.

Today we are observing World Marriage Day. Nothing makes our nation stronger or our
children more blessed and stable than strong homes, loving couples and parents. Getting

to remember your wedding day. A successful marriage is one in which you fall in love many

A WORD OF CAUTION!!! - It has come to our attention that someone posing as a worker for
the Erie County Water Authority recently entered a parishioner's home to supposedly change
a water meter and ended up damaging their pipes. A word of warning: know who you are
letting in your house, check their ID, look for an official company truck, or call the
utility company to see if the person is legitimate. You sometimes can't tell when someone
is "scamming" you, casing your house, or distracting you while someone else is
going through your house. Please be careful!!

February, 2004
Dear Parishioners,
Thanks to your generosity and responsible giving over the years we have been able to
maintain Christ the King parish in a fine manner. We will endeavor to continue our
Stewardship of the parish in the same manner. To maintain this level of commitment
requires that contributions at least keep pace with inflation.
We would like to bring to your attention the fact that the use of envelopes is down
from last year by 2.5% while the contributions are down 7.0%. During this same period the
number of registered families increased by almost 2%. The figures are noted below:
# Envelopes used Contributions # Families
Prior year 16,900 $350,700 2128
Current year 16,475 $325,700 2228
Difference - 425 - $ 25,000 40
- 2.5% - 7.0% + 1.8%
Unless we have improvement in the level of giving we will be down $60,000 for the
fiscal year. This will impact our operations in the coming year.
Each person must look at his or her own financial situation. We then ask that you
please take a moment to review your commitment to the church. Y`ou know in your heart that
when it comes to the Lord, your generosity will be returned many times over.
The Blessings of Christ the King,
Msgr. James Lichtenthal

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP
When we lose a loved one by death, we are wounded. Just as a wound does, we need to heal
from within, to express our thoughts and feelings, even when they seem crazy. A support
group is a safe haven where we can talk, cry, share our anger, guilt, and fears, with
those who understand and care. A Bereavement Support Group, sponsored by CTK Bereavement
Committee has been organized for all persons grieving the death of a loved one. The
program will consist of six sessions beginning Wednesday, March 17th, and every other
Wednesday through May 26th. This year, we are offering afternoon sessions beginning at
1:00 p.m. and evening sessions beginning at 7:00 p.m. The program will be held in the
Church Library. For more information, please call Linda Maslona at 839-2363.

1) Thank you for helping me bear my cross of anxiety;
2) Thank you for pushing me to attend Mission last year. It opened my eyes!

"God created the world out of nothing, and so long as we are nothing, He can make
something out of us." - Martin Luther
LENT IS UPON US
Believe it or not, in a few days it will be Ash Wednesday. One of the best ways to live
Lent is to begin at the end. The night before Jesus died, He said: "I will call you

Have you considered Eucharistic Adoration as your Lenten Spiritual dedication to God?
There are six weeks in Lent, can you commit to six hours of Adoration during this time?
If so, sign the sign below and place it in the box outside of the Adoration Chapel.
I WILL COMMIT TO SIX HOURS OF EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

death of a loved one. The program will consist of six sessions beginning Wed., March 17th,

and it is a time when we each need to look at our own life, and how
we live our faith. One of the best ways to live Lent is to begin at the end. The night
before Jesus died, He said: "I will call you friends." Let us live our Lent this
year as a friendship. Have you considered Eucharistic Adoration as your Lenten Spiritual
dedication to God? There are six weeks in Lent, can you commit to six hours of Adoration
during this time? If so, sign the sign below and place it in the box outside of the
Adoration Chapel.

A WORD OF CAUTION!!! - It has come to our attention that someone posing as a worker for

a water meter and ended up damaging their pipes. A word of warning: know who you are
letting in your house, check their ID, look for an official company truck, or call the

is "scamming" you, casing your house, or distracting you while someone else is
going through your house. Please be careful!!

NEW HYMNS AND SONGS IN MUSIC ISSUE 2004 - Another new year has begun with a new Music
Issue for 2004. This year's new music includes a balance of both traditional songs and a
more contemporary repertoire. Though we feel most comfortable singing songs that are
familiar to us, it is important to understand that new music is being composed to meet the
liturgical needs of our times. There are new psalms, bilingual music, and a wealth of
exceptional new hymn texts, set to well-known hymn tunes. For example, hymn #399, uses a
new text written following the events of September 11, 2001, but embraces the famous
melody Finlandia of hymn #624. The Music Ministry at CTK invites you to open your heart
and mind to some of these changes in the year ahead. Let us build the kingdom of Christ
together through prayer and music. God's Blessings! Christina Shrewsbury, Director of
Music Ministry

REMEMBER, IF YOU'RE SICK
it would be better for you to remain at home, rather
than coming to church and spreading your germs. If you have a cold, please do not receive
the Precious Blood at Mass or extend the Sign of Peace until you are well. ALSO: If you
have difficulty getting around in good weather, please stay home when it is icy or too
snowy.
February, 2004
Dear Parishioners,
Thanks to your generosity and responsible giving over the years we have been able to
maintain Christ the King parish in a fine manner. We will endeavor to continue our
Stewardship of the parish in the same manner. To maintain this level of commitment
requires that contributions at least keep pace with inflation.
We would like to bring to your attention the fact that the use of envelopes is down
from last year by 2.5% while the contributions are down 7.0%. During this same period the
number of registered families increased by almost 2%. The figures are noted below:
# Envelopes used Contributions # Families
Prior year 16,900 $350,700 2128
Current year 16,475 $325,700 2228
Difference - 425 - $ 25,000 40
- 2.5% - 7.0% + 1.8%
Unless we have improvement in the level of giving we will be down $60,000 for the
fiscal year. This will impact our operations in the coming year.
Each person must look at his or her own financial situation. We then ask that you
please take a moment to review your commitment to the church. Y`ou know in your heart that
when it comes to the Lord, your generosity will be returned many times over.
The Blessings of Christ the King,
Msgr. James Lichtenthal
Pastor
