WELCOME TO THE CHIRSTIAN COMMUNITY OF CHRIST THE KING
Nathan Denman Siffringer, son of Mary Jan (Pennella) & Steven Siffringer; and John
George Riadi, son of Melissa (West) & George Riadi; who were baptized in our Church
last weekend.
NO PARKING ALLOWED ON THE DRIVEWAY
OR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SMALL PARKING LOT
There is a recurring problem with parking in the small parking lot, especially during the
weekend masses. You are asked NOT TO PARK in the driveway between the Church and the
school and NOT TO PARK in the middle of the small parking lot. Please park only in the
lined parking spaces. People parking haphazardly, cause others to be blocked in, is a fire
hazard, and would prevent emergency vehicles from having access. Please be more
considerate of your fellow parishioners.
FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
Monday, Dec. 8th, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a Holy Day of Obligation.
Masses will be at 6:55, 8:45 a.m., Noon and 5:30 p.m.
THE MITTEN AND SOCK TREE
This year the Mitten & Sock Tree is set up in the vestibule of the Upper Church and it
will be our parish outreach project for the holiday season. Please help us fill this empty
tree with mittens, gloves, hats, socks and slippers, by next Sunday, Dec. 14TH. These
items will be donated to St. Luke's Mission of Mercy, and the Born Hava, a school located
in Amherst for children with cerebral palsy, autism and Down's Syndrome. Many of these
children live in the inner city & are in need of our help.
ADVENT CHAMBER CONCERTS
The Advent Chamber Concerts will be held in the Lower Church from 10:30-10:55 am, every
Sunday during Advent. Come early and enjoy the uplifting performances: Dec. 7th - Amie
Vredenburg, violinist; Dec. 14th - Parish Youth Choirs & Teen Ensembles; and Dec. 21st
- Kelly Bochynski, clarinetist.
CHRISTMAS WREATHS
Boy Scout Troop #431, which includes our boys, will be selling decorated fresh Christmas
wreaths outside the doors of the church after all Masses, $18 for a large size wreath.
FOOD BASKETS FOR THE POOR
This weekend, Dec. 6th & 7th, representatives of the St. Vincent de Paul Society will
be stationed at the church doors collecting monetary donations for food to be distributed
to needy families at Christmas time. Last year 350 bags were distributed, which we hope to
repeat again this year. Your continued giving is greatly appreciated.
CHRISTMAS TOY COLLECTION
The St. Vincent de Paul Society is collecting toys this weekend and next weekend, to
distribute to needy families during the Christmas Season. Past experiences have been very
rewarding. Last year the society was able to distribute over 1,000 toys to children from
needy families. A box will be in the Upper Church and Lower Church vestibules, ready to
receive your gifts. The toy may be wrapped or unwrapped. If wrapped, please indicate the
age level and boy or girl on the wrapper. Your generosity will help a child have a happy
holiday season.
"SCRAPBOOKING" FOR SENIORS
Parish Outreach is offering the Seniors of our parish a tangible way to collect, celebrate
& pass on their most treasured memories & life stories. Each person is the star of
his or her life & that story, when told, is an album that becomes a legacy. There are
special moments in our lives that we especially like to remember - childhood moments,
vacations, quiet times with family & friends, a wedding, graduation or the birth of a
new baby. We would like to help you organize your photographs, mementos & thoughts.
The next meetings will be in the Church Library from Noon- 2:00 pm, on Mon., Dec. 8th
& 15th. You will receive a photo album, a pen, tape for photographs & sheets to
take home. The cost is $10 & you may join at any time. To register or if you have any
questions, call Keri Mayer at 831-1246 or Linda Maslona at 839-2363.
BIBLE BUDDIES
You and your pre-school children ages 2-4 are invited to join us on either Wednesday, Dec.
10th or Thursday, Dec., 11th, from 10:00-10:30 in the Chapel Meeting Room (Please enter
through the little door under the canopy between the Church and the School.) We will share
a story with your child and help them to learn more about God and the Bible, and they will
make something special to bring home. The 2 sessions offered each month are identical, so
you may attend either. Please contact Adele Kraus at 839-5340 for details.

All women of the parish are invited to the Rosary and Altar Luncheon at Salvatore's
Italian Garden on Thursday, Dec. 11th at noon. Reservations are NOW due, please send a

Next weekend, a collection will be taken for the retired religious. Elderly members of the
religious outnumber those who earn salaries in the workplace, and they are financially
unable to care for the elderly. Please help those people who have given so much to us all,
especially those who have worked in our parish: the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, the
Franciscan Sisters of Penance & Charity, the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, the
Sisters of St. Joseph, the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, the Jesuit Fathers, and the
Oblates of Mary Immaculate.
CHRISTMAS WAFER (OPLATEK)
Christmas Wafers will be available after all masses next weekend (Dec. 13 & 14). Each
envelope contains 2 wafers. On Christmas Eve, or Christmas Day, you break & share the
Christmas wafer with your family or friends & make your Christmas Oblation of best
wishes to them, accompanied by expressions of forgiveness. Thus we share joy & harmony
in Christ as we share our Christmas family meals. As we continue this blessed tradition,
or begin a new heritage, our Christmas wafer helps us bring peace & happiness to our
hearts & homes.
CHRISTMAS CONCERT WITH CANISIUS HIGH SCHOOL ALL BOYS CHORUS
Enjoy the Christmas Season with a Christmas Concert, which will be held on Sunday, Dec.
14th, in the School Gym at 9:30 a.m. A Continental breakfast will be available at 8:45,
following the 8:00 a.m. Holy Name Mass. There is no admission, but a goodwill offering may
be made, or a child's toy to be distributed by St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Office (839-1430).
ADOPT A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS
The St. Vincent de Paul Society knows of several families (from the city of Buffalo) that
are experiencing financial difficulties at the present time. Consequently, their holiday
season is looking rather bleak. If your family would be interested in adopting one of
these families, and helping them with support in the way of food and gifts, please contact
Sue Cleary at 741-5043.

FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for safe traveling last weekend.
2) Thank you for my family's visits and phone calls.
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND 1 HOUR WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
"Look at the design of a woven basket. From the simplest basket to the most complex,
the ribs must be centered and held in balance. If the ribs are out of balance, the whole
basket will be lopsided, uneven and off-center. Just like a woven basket, our life's
journey must have a fixed bearing: Christ."
PRESIDENT SIGNS PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION BAN
The Catholic Bishops of the U.S. Diocese of Buffalo / Pro-Life Activities thank you for
your postcards, letters, phone calls, and most of all your prayers. After eight years,
you've made history. This marks the first federal restriction of an abortion procedure in
30 years. The struggle over partial-birth abortion is not over, and the ban faces a court
challenge. But today our nation is one step closer to a culture of life. May God bless
you.
NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE - The CTK Respect Life Committee invites you to join
the National Night of Prayer for Life to be held at St. Leo the Great Parish (885 Sweet
Home Rd) on Mon., Dec. 8th from 8:30 p.m.-1:00 a.m. Tues., Dec. 9th. We will be praying 15
decades of the Rosary, other prayers, and benediction. For more information, please
contact St. Leo's Rectory at 835-8905.
IN THIS SEASON OF COLDS AND FLU, SNEEZING AND COUGHING
If you are sick, it would
be better for you to remain at home, rather than coming to church and spreading your
germs. If you have a cold, please do not receive the Precious Blood at Mass or extend the
Sign of Peace until you are well. REMEMBER: If you have difficulty getting around in good
weather, please stay home when it is icy or snowy. God understands.
FAREWELL MASS AND RECEPTION FOR BISHOP MANSELL

light reception at the Buffalo Convention Center. All are welcome to attend the Mass &
Reception. Please join us as we express our sentiments of deepest gratitude and

15th.

FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for my mother's improving health;
2) Thank you everything that occurred yesterday;
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND
1 HOUR WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
"All good work is pleasing to the Father. Even the jobs that seem meaningless and
mindless to us are highly valued
God values the ordinary. If, for the glory of God,
you are putting an endless supply of nuts on an endless line of bolts, your work is rising
up as a sweet-smelling offering to the throne of God. He is pleased with your labor."
- Richard J. Foster
SPIRITUAL ADOPTION - TWO MONTH DEVELOPING BABY - Your baby is making progress
developing all of his external features & internal organs. His brain is functioning at
40 days. His mother can hear his heartbeat now on an ultrasonic stethoscope. His
milk-teeth buds are present at 6½ weeks, & it has been reported that a 2-month old
baby can suck his thumb. From this moment onward, your spiritually adopted baby grows
& refines his body. But everything he needs to survive once he is born is already
present by the end of the 8th week.
LET THE HOLY SPIRIT WORK THROUGH YOU - The Holy Spirit works through events and people.
During the next few weeks, some people, who are away from the Church will begin to feel
drawn back toward God. You can play an important role by inviting them to come to Advent
and Christmas activities with you. Your simple invitation could make a huge difference in
the life of a family member or friend.
ST. BENEDICT'S SENIOR CITIZENS GROUP
¢ On Monday, Dec. 29th join St. Benedict's Seniors for a guided tour of Our Lady of
Victory
National Basilica which will be decorated for the holidays. We will attend a Mass, &
enjoy lunch (choice of chicken or beef). Also includes a visit to the Erie County
Botanical Garden Poinsettia display. Cost is $26/person - leave at 10:30, return at 4:30 -
Space limited. Call Val by December 20th at 838-0291.
¢ Papal Treasures Tour on March 28, 29 & 30, to Cincinnati, Ohio. Visit Cathedral
Basilica
of Assumption (replica of Notre Dame in Parish), & dine in 3rd largest Hofbrauhaus in
the world. RESERVATIONS MUST BE BOOKED BY MONDAY, DEC. 15TH. - call Val at 838-0291.
CELEBRATE ADVENT - Reflect on the traditional Christmas symbols. For example: Christmas
Lights remind us of Jesus, the Light Who came into the world. Window Lights recall the
journey of Joseph & Mary (keep the light on for those who are journeying to your home
as you would for Joseph & Mary). Candy Canes remind us of a shepherd's staff.
Decorative Balls can represent the world. Give a Christmas Tree Ornament (purchased or
homemade) - does is signify a special quality of the person, or a special memory? As
Christmas week approaches, "fast" from anxiety & look for ways to be more
open to one another.

GOD ALWAYS ANSWERS OUR PRAYERS,
BUT SOMETIMES THE ANSWER IS YES,
SOMETIMES NO, AND SOMETIMES WAIT
Once upon a time a child was talking to God.
"What is a million dollars like to you?" the child asked God.
God answered: "A million dollars is like a penny to me."
The child then asked: "What is a million years like to you?"
"A million years is like a second to me," God replied.
Finally, the child boldly begged: "Could I have one of your pennies?"
"Yes," God quickly responded, "but could you wait a second?"

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
From meeting held on Monday, December 8, 2003
" Confession schedules for the Advent Season were mailed to parishioners, however, a
penance service was not scheduled this year, due to lack of available priests. Parents of
children in the Religious Education Program are reminded to bring their children to
receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, not only during Advent, but also throughout the
year.
" Msgr. Lichtenthal and the Parish Council encourage parishioners to attend the
Lessons and Carols program at CTK on Sunday, December 21 at 7 pm. Msgr. Lichtenthal made
note of the great effort put forth by Christina Shrewsbury and the parishioners involved
in bringing this special event to our parish community.
" Efforts are underway to update and refresh the parish web site - www.ctksnyder.com.
The objective is to create a more effective communications tool for our priests,
parishioners, and guests and increase awareness of opportunities at CTK for worship,
participation, education and stewardship. A committee consisting of several council
members is currently working on this project.
" The parish Council members extend their warmest wishes for a blessed Christmas
season and a Happy New Year to the parishioners of Christ the King.
The next Parish Council meeting is scheduled for January 5, 2004.

ONE SOLITARY LIFE
Here is a man who was born of Jewish parents in an obscure village, the child of a
peasant woman. ~ He grew up in another obscure village. He worked in a carpenter shop
until He was thirty, and then for three years He was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote
a book. He never held an office. He never owned a home. He never had a family. He never
went to college. He never put His foot inside a big city. ~ He never traveled two hundred
miles from the place where He was born. He never did one of the things that usually
accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself. He had nothing to do with this
world except the naked power of His divine manhood. While still a young man, the tide of
popular opinion turned against Him. ~ His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was
turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. ~ He was nailed to a
cross between two thieves. His executioners gambled for the only piece of property He had
on earth while He was dying - and that was His coat. When He was dead He was taken down
and laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. ~ Nineteen wide centuries have
come and gone and today He is the centerpiece of the human race and the leader of the
column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever
marched, and all the navies that were ever built, and all the parliaments that ever sat,
and all the kings that ever reigned, put together have not affected the life of man upon
this earth as powerfully as has that One Solitary Life

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
Dear Parishioners,
Thursday is Christmas Day, and you may still be "preparing" for your
celebrations. Hopefully, you will be able to take some time before Christmas to sit back
and enjoy the "Wonder of Christmas" and the birth of Christ. The priests and
sisters who serve you at Christ the King, pray that you have a Christmas season filled
with love and peace.
Christ came to spread peace and love among men and women of good will. May His love and
peace fill your hearts this Christmas. These are the best gifts of all. We thank you for
all the kindness you have shown to us at this time: cards, cookies and gifts. These
remembrances tell us of your love for us and we in turn will remember you and your
families as we offer holy Mass on Christmas Day. May the Christ child continue to bless
our Parish.
Have a blessed Christmas Season and a Happy and Holy New Year.
Sincerely,
Msgr. James Lichtenthal

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
SISTER MARY ELLEN TUCKER
DECEMBER 30TH
HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2004
TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES!!!!
From your Parish Priests, Sisters and Staff
"THANK YOU" TO ALL WHO HAVE HELPED
OUR PARISH WITH THEIR TIME AND TALENTS
We wish to take this opportunity, with the passing of the old year and the dawning of the
new year, to thank everyone who has increased our enjoyment of the Advent and Christmas
seasons. We extend our thanks to:
Our priests and the religious who have served us throughout the year;
Those who provided us with the wonderful music this year: Christina Shrewsbury, our
Director of Music Ministry, the Adult Choir, the Children's Youth Choir, the Neighborhood
Choir, and all the joyful singers and instrumentalists who have prepared, rehearsed and
performed special music through this season. Your gift of music greatly enriched this
liturgical season. Thank you to those who performed in the Lesson and Carols Program, the
Advent Chamber Concert Series, and to those who came to listen and support these events.
The Decorating Committee: Those men and women who gave of their time to decorate the
outside and inside of the church. The churches are very festive and have added to our
enjoyment of the Christmas season.
Our Arts and Environment Committee for the wonderful job they did with the Christmas
Flowers. It was truly a labor of love.
Dan Staszak, our maintenance Supervisor, who always works above and beyond! The
grounds during the summer are meticulously kept. In the winter Dan puts many hours into
keeping the church and school entrances clear of snow. His hard work is truly appreciated.
Thanks also to Eric Voglmayr who works part-time maintenance with Dan to keep the churches
clean.
Jim Valone, who serves as our Web Master and helps to maintain our website on a
weekly basis (www.ctksnyder.com). Our website is read internationally, and Jim has done a
wonderful job keeping it up-to-date.
Pat Wiedenbeck, who helps to decorate the front door of the Rectory Office with
beautifully decorated wreaths year-round. It is very much appreciated.
all others, whose quiet reliability helps our parish to function smoothly, not only
during the Christmas holidays, but year-round: the Lectors, the Eucharistic Ministers and
Dick & Jean Maslona who do the scheduling, the Altar Servers and the High School
servers who assist in the training, the Ushers, the Greeters and Dick Schanley who is
responsible for them, the Counters, the Adult Altar Servers and Mike Summers for arranging
coverage for funerals, the Outreach and Bereavement Committees which are run by Linda
Maslona, Parish Council Members, CTK Principal Sister Mary Ellen Tucker and the School
Teachers, Religious Education Director, Peggy Page and the volunteer Teachers, and our
Youth Ministers, Mary Ann Peer and Debbi Testa. Without their dedication to these
ministries, the everyday operations at the parish would be much more difficult.
Thank you, may God keep you, and may the joy of the Christmas season remain with you
always.
Msgr. Lichtenthal and Father Joe
