these children live in the inner city and are in need of our assistance.
CHRISTMAS TOY COLLECTION

been very rewarding. Last year the society was able to distribute over 1,000 toys to
children from needy families. Toys for children ranging in age from 1 year to 10 years of
age will be collected on those weekends. A box is in the Upper Church and Lower Church

FAVORS GRANTED THROUGH PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Adorers of the Perpetual Adoration wish to thank Jesus for the following favors:
1) Thank you for my husband's successful surgery;
2) Thank you for a safe journey.
ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND 1 HOUR
WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
During Advent, the Church reflects on Mary and her anticipation of the birth of Jesus. The
words of the Magnificat recorded in Luke's gospel are not those of a submissive woman.
They
come from a woman of integrity, insight and compassion. A woman who knows & trusts
God.

that we live each day according to the teachings of Christ. Some are called to teach,

Church vocation. If God is calling you to be a priest or religious, call Father Leon
Biernat at 847-5535.

CHANGES DIRECTED THROUGH THE VATICAN**
TO BE IMPLEMENTED ON NOVEMBER 30TH /DECEMBER 1ST
THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
**The Vatican determines how priests are to say the mass. The document they use for
guidance is the Roman Missal. From time to time the Roman Missal is updated and changes
are made. Some of these changes are listed.
1: The faithful should stand from the words of the priest "Pray brethren", to
before the prayer over the gifts.
2: The faithful are asked to kneel during the Eucharistic Prayer and to remain kneeling
through the singing of the Great Amen.
3: Songs or hymns may not be used in place of the Responsorial Psalm.
4: The Book of Gospels is carried in the procession at the start of Mass; the
Lectionary is not carried in the procession. Lay readers are allowed to carry the Book of
Gospels in the absence of a deacon, who would normally do so. The primacy of the Book of
the Gospels in the Liturgy of the Word, and the tradition in both East and West of
treating this book as one of the primary symbols of the presence of Christ at Mass are
thus highlighted. Neither the Book of Gospels nor the Lectionary is ever carried out at
the time of the Recessional.
5: During the kiss of peace, the priest generally should not leave the sanctuary. The
priest may give the sign of peace to the ministers.
6: During the Distribution of Holy Communion, the faithful may make a simple bow of
their head before receiving the Sacred Host in Holy Communion as well as before receiving
the Precious Blood. Genuflection is not necessary
7: A single genuflection as you enter Church at your pew, and a single genuflection at
the end of Mass, if the Eucharist is reserved in the sanctuary, offers due respect to the
Blessed Sacrament.
8: Our standing Processional Cross, with the figure of Christ on it, which stands in
the sanctuary, must be visible to the faithful during Mass.
9: In the Diocese of the United States of America, crosses may be covered (veiled) from
the conclusion of the Mass on Saturday of the 4th Week of Lent until the end of the
celebration of the Lord's Passion on Good Friday, Images in the Church may be covered from
the conclusion of the Mass on Saturday of the 4th Week of Lent until the beginning of the
Easter Vigil.
FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

FATHER SERMON SAYS . . .
"Use your missal, mind your Latin;
don't let the host fall on the paten.
Try not to cough when I dispense
smoky clouds of strong incense.
Say 'Amen!' with deep conviction;
don't skip out on Benediction.
Be sure to tithe you 10 percent
and give up candy during Lent.

ask God to bless your parish priest!"

ANOTHER REASON FOR WANTING TO SPEND 1 HOUR
WITH JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:
"We sometimes fear to bring our troubles to God, because they must seem so small to

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING
DECEMBER 2, 2002
" The Parish Financial Report has been completed. It is inserted into today's
bulletin.
" Mass Schedules will remain the same for the foreseeable future. Although Fr.
David's departure presents a significant challenge, each Mass is too well attended to make
any changes at this time. As such, the Council stressed that, now more than ever, it is
very important for Altar Servers, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and Ushers to do their
best to fulfill their obligation at the masses.
" Confession Schedules for the Advent Season have been mailed out to parishioners.
Schedules for nearby Churches are also published in today's bulletin. This should assist
parishioners in finding alternatives to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during
this busy time of year.
" The Parish Council Members extend our warmest wishes for a blessed Christmas Season
and a Happy New Year to the parishioners of Christ the King. The next Parish Council
meeting is scheduled for January 7, 2003.

DEAR FRIENDS AT CTK,
A heartfelt thank you for the marvelous out-pouring of love shown to me not only at the
farewell party, but throughout the eight years of my ministry here at Christ the King. I
have been privileged to minister with many special people. Each of them has been a
blessing to me.
In a very special way I want to thank Msgr. Lichtenthal for his tremendous support. I also
want to thank Sr. Mary Ellen and Mrs. JoAnn Mikulec for their help as I ministered to the
school children. Thanks to Fr. Joe for his support and laughter. And finally, thank you to
all the wonderful parishioners who left their hand prints on my heart forever. I am deeply
grateful.

HELP MAKE YOUR HOLIDAYS LESS LONELY AND HASSEL-FREE
Plan Ahead, Set Priorities & Don't be Afraid to Make Changes: Choose realistic goals,
based on personal and family needs. It helps to avoid letdowns and makes this time of year
more enjoyable. Plan holiday activities with a sense of care and joy. Quieter ways of
celebrating can be selected if that fits the need. Customs can be altered or adapted.
Young couples especially, might easily make adjustments. Traditions which are too
difficult or painful, may be replaced with others more appropriate.
Attend a Christmas Program: Many schools hold a special performance with the children.
Take someone who could not normally attend.
Trim a Tree: Caroling and tree-trimming parties are fun events. Families with children
might
invite others in to share the enthusiasm of the children.
Make a Gift: Homemade gifts & gag-gifts add a dimension of personal value to both the
giver
and the receiver. Special love can be put into creative wrapping of gifts.
Spread Out the Activities: Holidays don't need to be celebrated on the actual day. The day
before or after, or the Sunday before or after are possible alternatives to solve the
problem of crowded and over-tiring situations. Remember, the Christmas Season lasts for
two weeks after Christmas.
Be Aware of Others: Children, teens, and adults can feel loneliness with the holidays.
Help a
lonely child by reading a story, going for a walk, or even visiting a manger scene in
Church. Someone who is truly alone might be invited to Christmas Dinner or some other
holiday meal. Eucharistic Ministers might bring Jesus in the Eucharist to a shut-in on
Christmas Day.
Save the Gifts: Instead of opening all the gifts at once, a new one could be opened each
day
during the season. Parents might even choose to keep some hidden gifts for the children
and bring them out bit-by-bit.
Accept Invitations: There is wisdom in accepting invitations when possible, for in being
the
guest, the visitor, there is love in being at home with others.
Reach Out: New Year's Day might be just right for writing letters to those living away
from
home, or making phone calls to those special persons who cannot share the holidays.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
Dear Parishioners,

celebrations. Hopefully, you will be able to take some time before Christmas to sit back
and enjoy the "Wonder of Christmas" and the birth of Christ. The priests and
sisters who serve you at Christ the King, pray that you have a Christmas season filled
with love and peace.
Christ came to spread peace and love among men and women of good will. His love and peace
fill your hearts this Christmas. These are the best gifts of all. We thank you for all the
kindness you have shown to us at this time: cards, cookies and gifts. These remembrances
tell us of your love for us and we in turn will remember you and your families as we offer
holy Mass on Christmas Day. May the Christ child continue to bless our Parish.
Have a Blessed Christmas Season and a Happy and Holy New Year.

difficulty getting around in good weather, please stay home when it's icy or snowy. God

"THANK YOU" TO ALL WHO HAVE HELPED
OUR PARISH WITH THEIR TIME AND TALENTS
Again this year, we remember and thank all those who have added to our delight of the
Advent and Christmas seasons. We extend our thanks to:
Our priests and the religious who have served us throughout the year;
Those who provided us with the wonderful music this year: Christina Shrewsbury, our
Director of Music Ministry, and Kevin Durkin and Bryan Eckenrode who play at the 7:00 p.m.
and 8:00 a.m. weekend masses, and to the Adult Choir, the Children's Youth Choir, the
Neighborhood Choir, and all the joyful singers and instrumentalists who have prepared,
rehearsed and performed special music through this season. Your gift of music greatly
enriched this liturgical season. Thank you to those who performed in the Advent Chamber
Concert Series, to the Youth Choir and to those who came to listen and support these
events.
The Decorating Committee: Those men and women who gave of their time to decorate the
outside and inside of the Church. The Churches are very festive and have added to our
enjoyment of the Christmas season.
Our Arts and Environment Committee for the wonderful job they did with the Christmas
Flowers. It was truly a labor of love.
Dan Staszak, our Maintenance Supervisor, a very special thanks! Dan's pride in his
work is obvious. During the summer, the church lawns, gardens and bushes are meticulously
kept. In the winter, Dan puts many hours into keeping the church and school entrances
clear of snow. His hard work is not unappreciated. Thanks also to Eric Voglmayr who works
part-time maintenance with Dan to keep the Churches clean.
To Jim Valone who serves as our Web Master, and maintains our website
(www.ctksnyder.com), on a weekly basis. Our web site is read internationally, and Jim has
done a wonderful job keeping it up-to-date.
To Pat Wiedenbeck, who helps keep the entrance to the Rectory looking festive. Pat
puts a wreath on the Rectory door reflecting the season. The wreath's are always
beautifully decorated and very much appreciated!
All others, whose quiet reliability helps our parish to function smoothly, not only
during the Christmas holidays, but year-round: the Lectors, the Eucharistic Ministers and
Dick & Jean Maslona who do the scheduling, the Altar Servers and the High School
servers who assist in the training, the Ushers, the Greeters and Dick Schanley who is
responsible for them, the Counters, the Adult Altar Servers and Mike Summers for arranging
coverage for funerals, the Outreach and Bereavement Committees which are run by Linda
Maslona, Parish Council Members, CTK Principal Sister Mary Ellen Tucker and the School
Teachers, Religious Education Director, Peggy Page and the Volunteer Teachers, and our
Youth Ministers, Mary Ann Peer and Debbi Testa. Without their dedication to these
ministries, the everyday operations at the parish would be much more difficult.
Thank you, may God keep you, and may the joy of the Christmas season remain with you
always.
Msgr. Lichtenthal and Father Joe

Novena To The Christ Child
In The Christmas Season
To be said for nine days, beginning with Christmas Day
Pray the Daily Novena Prayer, each day's selection, and the Daily Prayer of Petition
Daily Novena Prayer: Infant Jesus, so that we might become sons of God, you became a
helpless little child. In homage, gratitude, and admiration, we kneel before you. Though
hindered by our sins, we know your love exceeds our frequent failures. Please help us,
divine Child, to appreciate the great mystery of your life, and assist us to remake our
lives according to your word. By the intercession of our Virgin-Mother, Mary most holy,
assist us now in all our necessities.
Daily Prayer of Petition: In your loving kindness, Infant Savior, I beg your aid amid my
own necessities and anxieties. All my cares I offer you in humble worship and confidence.
Please be mindful, too, of the Holy Father, our Bishops, our Pastors, and all priests and
religious who are shepherds of our souls. Fortify them as you also strengthen and help our
magistrates and civil rulers, and protect our country against its enemies. Assist and
sustain all who suffer, the sick, and destitute, prisoners, and all who are in any way
afflicted. Have pity, too, most merciful Savior, on all who have not yet heard the good
news of your salvation. Please send them apostolic missionaries. Bless us all, Lord Jesus,
and lead us safely to your heavenly kingdom. AMEN.
First Day - The Word of God: There was no room for them in the place where travelers
lodged (Luke 2:7); Reflection: No room in the inn for the Lord who made heaven and earth!
No place except with the animals for the Savior of men and his Virgin Mother.
Prayer: Infant Savior, you left the throne of heaven to share our life, to live as a human
being. You became a helpless infant, and asked your holy Mother and St. Joseph to share
your lot among the poorest. Help us, Lord, by your example to understand the depths of
love for us that inspired your humble birth and to imitate your love of littleness in our
own life. AMEN
Practice: If the Lord of creation chose to be so little, let us imitate Him today by
accepting gladly one pain or trouble in our life.
Second Day - The Word of God: To His own He came, yet His own did not accept Him. (John
1:11); Reflection: To love deeply, to offer one's self in love, and to have it rejected,
what greater trial is there in life?
Prayer: Infant Jesus, it was your infinite love that prompted your coming among us to
share our lot as men, to be ready to live as the poorest of men, and even to die as a
common criminal. Please teach us to love as you did, and to take the risk of having love
rejected and being despised for your sake. Let your grace sustain me, your example inspire
me, your teaching correct me. AMEN. Practice: Show special kindness, as Jesus did, to
those who rejected Him by doing good to someone you love the least.
Third Day - The Word of God: The angel said to them: You have nothing to fear! (Luke
2:10); Reflection: When we are very much afraid, as the simple shepherds were, let us
remember the angel's message, and trust in God's goodness.
Prayer: Sweet Babe of Bethlehem, God protected you as a child from the envy of Herod, and
from the hazards of your infancy. Please assist us in our weakness to place our trust in
God's provident care and love, protect us from the effects of our own sin, and help us to
be strong and unafraid. Increase our love of you, our obedience to your will, and our
imitation of your example so that amid all the trials of life we may place all our hope in
you. AMEN. Practice: Just once today put your own convenience and self-interest aside in
order to do a deed of compassion for one of Christ's needy brothers.
Fourth Day - The Word of God: All this is the work of the kindness of our God; He, the
Dayspring, shall visit us. (Luke 1:78); Reflection: It was our need that brought the Son
of God from heaven to assume our fallen nature. He took pity on our misery and
helplessness. Prayer: Little Lord Jesus, it is sin and its consequences that now afflict
us. In your love you undertook to conquer sin and death for us in your own person. Thus,
you showed us the path to eternal glory, which we can only attain by following you
faithfully. Help us, powerful Babe of Bethlehem, to live as you did to overcome sin, and
to do the Father's will in all things. AMEN. Practice: Just for today, try faithfully with
Jesus' help to do God's will rather than to follow our own inclination.
Fifth Day - The Word of God: The grace of God has appeared, offering salvation to all men.
(Titus 2:11); Reflection: The Infant Jesus redeemed us just by taking on our fallen human
nature, but His love for us was so great He gave up His life as well. Prayer: Infant
Savior, how can we ever thank you or prove grateful enough for all you have done to rescue
us from misery and eternal death? You ask us only to sacrifice our own selfish desires and
plans, and do whatever is your divine will for us. Help us, please, to say as you did,
"Let thy will be done," for God's will is our peace. AMEN. Practice: Think of
one action you can perform today that will please God, and help one of God's children as
he has helped you.
Sixth Day - The Word of God: Let this be a sign to you: in a manger you will find an
infant in swaddling clothes. (Luke 2:12); Reflection: The Lord adorned the heavens with
planets and stars, and our earth will plants and flowers, yet He rests in a cold stable.
Prayer: Little Savior of mankind, you created the world and all that is in it by your
plentiful power. By that same power you will come to judge the world. But to save us and
to win us you came in weakness and littleness to prove to us how with your assistance,
strength may be born in the powerlessness of love. AMEN. Practice: Let us humble ourselves
today to honor the Christ Child and to overcome our pride with the help of His grace.
Seventh Day - The Word of God: We found the child with Mary, His mother. (Matthew 2:11);
Reflection: The wise men took great trouble and spared no pain or expense in order to seek
out and find the newborn king. Prayer: How often, Infant Jesus, we are too tired, too
careless, or too disinterested to come to worship you as we ought! Yet, you wait for us,
love us from afar, and send your grace to draw us to you. Help us, Lord Jesus, to be
attentive to your voice, to hasten to you in every need, and to adore you as the wise men
did. Then, you will lead and guide us safely home again. AMEN. Practice: We always can
find Christ today if we seek Him in His temple, or among the poor and the lonely who are
His special care .
Eighth Day - The Word of God: Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her
heart. (Luke 2:19); Reflection: Our blessed Mother learned to appreciate the mysteries of
Christ's life just as we must by silent prayer and reflection. Prayer: Jesus, our Infant
Savior, all you said and did in your life among us has meaning and purpose. Help us, then,
to follow your words and example and apply them each day in the circumstances of our own
life. With your grace, and the intercession of our Virgin-Mother Mary, may we grown in the
knowledge and love of God by perfect obedience to your Commandments. AMEN. Practice: Sit
quietly for five minutes today & tell the Infant Savior in your heart that you wish to
love Him perfectly.
Ninth Day - The Word of God: I come to proclaim good news to you - tidings of great joy.
(Luke 2:10); Reflection: Until we have some sense of the awfulness of sin, and of our own
misery and wretchedness we will never rightly value the good news of Christ. Prayer:
Infant Savior of the world, in your loving mercy, "guide our feet into the way of
peace." Amid all the cares and anxieties of life lead us always along the paths of
righteousness, for the sake of your name. You have completed the work of our salvation,
but make it effective in us who are so prone to stumble, and be diverted form our true
path. Come to our aid. AMEN. Practice: Resolve today for love of the Christ Child to
forgive everyone who has ever tried to hurt or harm you in any way.
