Bishop Edward D. Head, the 11th bishop of Buffalo, died on Tuesday, March 29th at the age

Head retired in April, 1995, succeeded by Bishop Henry J. Mansell (now archbishop of
Hartford) and most currently by Bishop Edward Kmiec.
During his tenure, Bishop Head ordained 124 men to the priesthood and confirmed more than
50,000 young people. Under his leadership, the Diocese experienced growth in services and
Catholic Charities, he initialized steps in the canonization process of Msgr. Nelson
Baker, and remained active in health care ministry even after his retirement.
Bishop Edward Kmiec, said that "This is a day of tremendous sadness for the family of
the Diocese of Buffalo. During his 22 years as the bishop of Buffalo, Bishop Head had a
tremendous impact on the faith lives of Catholics in the eight counties of WNY."

CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2005 - Thank you for being a community of Hope! Your
generosity of time, talents, and treasure made our $10.7 million goal for Appeal 2005
achievable. Those we nurture, care for and assist also appreciate your support. If somehow
you have not had the opportunity to contribute to Appeal 2005, it's not too late. As of
Tuesday, March 29th, our parishioners donated $204,879 to Catholic Charities. You can

stability to the community. Please give generously. We are a Community of Hope. Go to
www.ccwny.org, to find out more or donate online, or call 856-4494. Be hope for someone in
need.
BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP - When we lose a loved one by death, we are wounded. Just as
a wound does, we need to heal from within, to express our thoughts and feelings, even when
they seem crazy. A support group is a safe haven where we can talk, cry, share our anger,
guilt and fears with those who understand and care. A Bereavement Support Group, sponsored
by CTK Bereavement Committee has been organized for all persons grieving the death of a
loved one. The next session will be on Tuesday, April 5th at 7 pm and every other Tuesday

Extreme Makeovers of local homes
and lives. Seniors, Singles, Parents, Children
come enjoy an evening of fellowship and refreshments as we further explore service
to the poor as another way to pray. Details are posted in the back of Church.
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process through which newcomers are
welcomed into the Roman Catholic Church, and others complete their initiation in our
faith. We are proud of our elect and candidates who have now fully entered into our
Catholic community. Those of you who attended the Easter Vigil were fortunate to witness
Linda Catterson, Mandy Jarosik, Katherine Hayes, Kathryn Militello and Shannon O'Malley as
they received the Sacraments of Initiation. They have been studying the Catholic faith
since September and have grown considerably in their spirituality. Let us pray for Linda,
Mandy, Katherine, Kathryn and Shannon as we celebrate with them as they join our Church
family.

POPE JOHN PAUL II
We are all saddened by the death of Pope John Paul II. Join us next Sunday, April 17th at
the 8:00 a.m. Mass offered in his memory.
"He was a true pope of the people, our father, our spiritual leader, a man who poured
his entire being into the papacy. Pope John Paul II led the Catholic Church through
important and challenging times, and despite the many challenges he and the Church faced,
he always remained true to his convictions. He was truly a pope of the people, taking more
than 100 foreign trips during his papacy. We will remember him as a heroic figure of deep
faith as he worked to build the Kingdom of God on earth.
"The pope was at the forefront of the most important issues of the day. We will
always remember the major role he played in the fall of communism. He led the pro-life
movement with a clear and strong voice, he was an advocate for human rights around the
world, calling out abuses and pressing government leaders for change. His comfort and
prayerful support for the sick and dying was another hallmark of his papacy, especially
for those afflicted with HIV/AIDS. He set a high standard for all who minister. His very
public suffering in the final years of his life was wonderful testimony to the sanctity of
life. His will and determination showed the world how precious life is.
"As a result, our Church has been strengthened and remains committed to the values
that the Holy Father so clearly articulated during the 26 years in which he guided us. The
Pope touched so many lives in so many ways. From his special connection to the youth of
the world, to his love and respect for women religious, deacons and the laity, to his
unbreakable bond with his brother priests, Pope John Paul II was indeed a shining example
of what one can do with the gifts we are all given from God. He truly was a light for the
world.
"Join me in praying for the repose of the soul of Pope John Paul II. We know that God
will welcome him into heaven. May he rest in peace". - Bishop Kmiec comments on the
death of Pope John Paul II

CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2005 - April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Recognize what it is (physical, sexual, emotional abuse or any form of neglect) and some
of its risk factors (inability to cope with life's stresses, being unaware that a form of
discipline is too harsh or age inappropriate, as well as living below poverty level,
social isolation, frequent family crises, substance abuse and lack of parenting skills).
Then offer to help a family in crisis or under stress: baby-sit, help with chores/errands,
& suggest community resources, such as the nearest Catholic Charities office. As of
Tuesday, April 5th, our parishioners donated $205,714 to Catholic Charities. You can still
drop your donations off to the Rectory or place them in the weekly collection basket. If
you're employed by a firm that "matches gifts" to charitable institutions,

who understand and care. A Bereavement Support Group, sponsored by CTK Bereavement

WESTERN NEW YORK CATHOLIC
There is a special edition of the WNY Catholic available in the back of Church. It is a
16-page full color tribute to Pope John Paul II. The paper looks at the life and death of
the Holy Father and his impact on the Catholic Church and the world. In the May issue of
the WNY Catholic, there will be a special pullout section that will feature a special
tribute to Bishop Edward D. Head.
A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: This is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to
use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. What I do today is important because I'm
exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever,
leaving in its place something I have traded for it. I want it to be gain, not loss; good,
not evil; success, not failure; in order that I shall not regret the price I paid for it.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL
The second collection today will be for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. This Appeal
supports the home missions - right here in the U.S. where the Catholic Church struggles
just to keep parishes open and to educate children in the faith. Some dioceses are short
of priests, sisters and the money needed to run parishes. This Appeal helps build
community within the Church and works for the common good of Catholics in the US. Please
give generously to help your fellow Catholics here in the United States.
BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP
When we lose a loved one by death, we are wounded. Just as a wound does, we need to heal
from within, to express our thoughts and feelings, even when they seem crazy. A support
group is a safe haven where we can talk, cry, share our anger, guilt and fears with those
who understand and care. A Bereavement Support Group, sponsored by CTK Bereavement
Committee has been organized for all persons grieving the death of a loved one. The next
session will be on Tuesday, April 26th at 7 pm and every other Tuesday through May 24th.
The program will be held in the Church Library. For more information, please call Linda
Maslona at 839-2363.

story with your child and help them to learn more about God and the Bible, and they will
make something special to bring home. The two sessions offered are identical, so you may

entrances and the food collection basket in the vestibule of the Upper Church. The
generosity of people at CTK continues to amaze us. Rest assured that every penny is used
